Tuner recommendations for a Squier Vista Venus XII

Post by javier-san » Sun Oct 11, 2020 10:03 pm

Anyone have recommendations for some new tuners (locking, if possible) for a venus XII?
I really dislike the ones that are on there...

Those are vintage-style with the blocky housing, right? That's what the photos I can find are showing.

I'd recommend the Gotoh vintage tuners - they're like $70 for a set of 6 (you'd need a lefty and righty set to get all the tuners), are really smooth to turn, keep tune very well, and you can get them as non-locking, top-locking (with a coin or pick or something), or with a thumbwheel, and they're not super heavy for being locking which is nice especially for a 12. I have a set of the SD91 thumbwheel lockers on my Mustang and it took the guitar from "nice but the trem goes out of tune to easily" to "nice and the trem only goes out if I treat it like a Floyd".

I have Wilkinson Locking Tuners on my Jazzmaster XII, I’m pretty pleased with them

I bought Kluson tuners off ebay when I was rehabbing my Venus XII- a RH set and a LH set dropped in perfectly with no extra drilling or anything. Cost me $72.00 including shipping - about 5 years ago though.

Haven't had any trouble with them staying in tune even though they aren't locking- even with the experimental trem I have installed. (just search "Velvet Venus" on the forum here if you want more details- there's a whole thread there with photos, etc.)

As a former owner of a Vista series guitar (97 Jagmaster), the MIJ tuners from that era are indeed pretty sloppy. You can identify them from that little lip at the bottom of the peg. I can't recall for sure if I had any tuning issues, per se, but they certainly didn't make me feel confident in them based on much slop there was in the turns. I would also recommend just a straight swap for a better Kluson style tuner.

The way to go is the Gotoh vintage tuners.
Best out there, best value for $, never had any issues with GOTOH for any of the builds I have done over the years.
relaxing alternative to doing actual work ...
