TBX alternative options

Post by niksureal » Tue Nov 10, 2020 8:34 pm

I haven't had any luck, maybe someone here knows...
Looking for a pot like to a TBX (specifically the detent) but instead of 250k/1meg, I am looking for both halves 1meg. 500k/1meg would also be good. Seems like such a thing should exist. I have found a few 1meg dual pots but they do not specify a detent. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I believe that what the proper pot would be is a audio taper dual 1 Meg "balance blend" or "pan" potentiometer, with a center detent. Not sure if those exist, might imply checking eg. mouser and other large vendors rather than guitar/bass parts sellers.

If nothing else, it should be possible to achieve by changing resistance wafers in the pots themselves, but have only read about this myself. Yet...
Jazzmaster project (got a body, placeholder neck, some pickups and ideas)
Tokai Telecaster Thinline with Creamery Pickups Filtertron and Tapped Tele
Blake Mills-inspired Strat project w/ Gold Foil and slide pickup

Thanks. Yeah, I'm not sure I'm into the idea of pot surgery.

CTS pots are generally very easy to disassemble and reassemble, the phenolic wafer with the carbon strip is a separate piece and not crimped to the shaft like Alpha or Bourns pots. You can see how a CTS pot is disassembled in the video, around the 2 minute mark.

You could just swap in the phenolic wafer from the pots with the taper you desire.

Centre detents are usually physically achieved via the center shaft or housing via some mechanism. I haven't worked with CTS detented pots before, but theoretically since the center detents don't involve the phenolic wafer, you should be able to swap out resistance values from an existing dual gang centre detented potentiometer. YMMV
