String spacing on the Mascis Jazzmaster

Post by Astrovanallen » Fri Jan 08, 2021 10:38 am

It’s bothered me since I bought it, but I’ve just dealt with the fact that my Mascis Jazzmaster has an issue with the high and low e string being too close to the edge of the neck in comparison to other guitars I’ve owned. I swapped the strings to 11’s which still seem really slinky to me, to possibly help the issue but it hasn’t made much of a difference and I’m periodically bending those strings right off the neck. Does anyone have any recommendations? Do I need to just change the bridge? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The Mascis uses an Adjustomatic bridge, right?

My $0.02 is to pick up a replacement with slightly narrower string spacing, or cut some grooves that are a bit narrower (if there's none currently there, which I've seen a few times).

Yep, on a TOM you can just file down the existing notches and make new ones spaced however you like.

Free and simple. If I screw it up, I can just buy another Tom. That’s a really great idea, thanks to the both of you.

You don't even need to buy a new TOM, you can just get the saddles which are even cheaper to replace.

Glad you found it helpful :)
