Damascus Neck Plates

Post by HNB » Sun Sep 26, 2021 1:36 pm

They claim to improve tone. I have seen other plate makers who claim similar stuff. Sounds like snake oil to me. Thoughts?

$150 for a neck plate. :fp:

They look cool. I’ll give him that.

I'm all about it. I love this stuff. I love snake oil and I love to spend money.

It's a hundred and fifty dollars.

Classic case of people hearing what they want to hear.

I enjoyed the testimonial that repeatedly referred to “Scott’s MAGICAL NECK PLATES”.

Pretty much the only way I can see a neck plate improving tone is if don't have one because your neck and body aren't connected, then you add one and put some screws through it so you can actually string the guitar.

Isn't this just a throwback to the 70s when people were sticking all the brass they could on their guitars for the tonez?

I doubt they are genuine Damascus steel. The countersunk holes do not reveal any of the layers typical of true Damascus steel formation. The face showing layers looks like it's been etched with acid in stages. ::)

If it is damascus steel, it looks like really poorly made damascus steel, and there’s no way it could make an audible difference over normal steel plates.

I’m pretty sure the Henry Kaiser review is sarcastic. Maybe he’s friends with the guy.

It the goal was a more solid connection, wouldn't the screws make more difference than the plate the screws anchor to?

I'm sure there is significant overlap in the Venn diagram of the people who are dumb enough to think that your neck plate is HUGELY consequential to your tone and those who are willing to spend $150 on a tiny square of metal.

It looks like terrible quality material slopped with black paint to highlight the irregular surface. You look at the pictures up close and you can practically see the contaminants and slag and defects in the material. It's like some backyard homemade attempt at damascus steel by someone who hasn't even watched a youtube video of someone who knows what they're doing.

100% snake oil. I will believe the screw torque can effect tone, slightly. However, the neck plate has no function in screw torque. You can remove the neck plate and use washers instead, just to reduce the screws burrowing into the finish. Either way, torque is torque, and the neck plate is irrelevant.

Nevertheless, if you like how it looks, and can afford it, but the damn thing!

Got it in one! That is 100% etched steel, not Damascus! My undergraduate was in design engineering with a lot of time working with metals (before I became a professional designer). The description even says an alloy of three metals, including used saw blades. TLDR: Pot Metal!

What gets me the most is the lack of videos/ sound files. If the tone improved as much as the description says it does, why not put the proof out there‽

Not worth the price in my book!

It doesn't just change your guitar's tone, though. It changes the tone and the feel. It said so right on the website.

Fuck setups and fret jobs, I'm getting me some MAGICAL NECK PLATES instead. Hell, neck profile not to your liking? MAGICAL NECK PLATES. Now it's all better.

CLEARLY A BARGAIN AT TWICE THE PRICE
This is an excellent rectangle
