dead pickup. why?

Check the integrity of that wire (assuming there's something similar on the other side), probe those two solder points with your multimeter, maybe reflow those two solder joints if it's still showing open circuit
yeah i checked those two solder pads at the time with the same result.
There's one observation i made that i didn't mention yet. I took off the black tape that goes around the whole pickup to see if that would reveal anything. There was a strand of the copper coil that was loose. looked like one hair out of place.

i think i am just now realizing this is the cause of the problem. Is is possible to reattach that somewhere?

If you can figure out which of those rectangular solder pads correspond to the start or the finish of the coil, you can try soldering it there.
