Sunday Handwired pickups FTW.

Post by OffYourFace » Sun Aug 13, 2023 1:41 am

I just replaced the pickups in a friend's Squier Jazzmaster. I'm not sure what the model is called? It has a bright CAR finish and it's basically a J Mascis model. It had the P90 pickups, gold anodized pickguard and the tuneomatic bridge. It's a nice guitar, i think it plays great. I thought the P90s in it sounded cool too. But he wanted it to sound more traditional so cool, no problem.

He bought a set of SHW pickups so I was excited to hear them. Like I said, I thought the guitar sounded good before but when I plugged it in with the new pickups I was really blown away. I expected them to be good but I think they're the best aftermarket JM pickups I've ever heard.

I was a little in shock so I had to pull out my vintage JM, which has a great set of 1959 pickups, to compare. God Damn, this Squier sounds as good as my vintage guitar. I'm dead serious.

The pickup models he chose are the Woody (A2) in the bridge and the 5859 (A5) in the neck. (edit: it was the Iola set) I would have never thought to choose a mix of magnets but I will now with SHW. The bridge sounds amazing and never piercing. It still cuts like a good bridge pickup. The guitar sounds perfectly balanced in all 3 positions in the lead ckt. without having to re-EQ my amp. I really like the middle position. It doesn't sound so scooped like most newer pickups. It's got a bit more heft in that position but still very jazzmaster-y.

Anyway, I just thought I'd come on here and give Timbo a shout-out. I'm so happy for him, these things are amazing. :)

Co-signed.

Tim's pickups are what I finally settled on after cycling through a few from SD and Novak.

I've been looking at SHW pickups and Tim's posts about the 5859 say the model name isn't a reference to the years but I'm still not clear on what the inspiration is.

Tim shared your post about this on Instagram. 🤣

Both your '59 and the Deluxe are gorgeous!

So when you say the Deluxe sounds "as good" as the '59, are they in the same sort of timbral range (like how a '59 is generally described as darker and mellower) or is the Deluxe with the SHW pickups great sounding but that later, brighter surfy sound?

I ended up sticking with a pair of his in the AV65 JM. We used A2 magnets for the two high strings and A5 for the rest. It sounds thick and rich with some super cool highs. Though the 6g15 it is slightly shrill but totally manageable, whereas the Novaks, AV65s and AV62s weren't.

Tim makes some cook pickups. He wound me some Firebirds in PAF-sized covers and we had a great discussion about whether to stick with vintage specs or his "modern" approach, which is wound a little hotter and has a thicker steel plate underneath to increase the inductance.

I went for vintage neck, modern bridge in the end. He was super backlogged at the time so it took a while to get them, but he did a superb job at a great price.

Neck meters 7.6k and bridge is 9.6k. Maybe sightly hotter is more mellow?

Thanks! Similar timbral range. Neither is bright and scooped like say Duncan vintage JMs or Antiquity IIs.
I mention those because that’s what is in the other two JMs I have here.

The Squier could benefit from a new tailpiece. I put 12-54s on it and the action of the tremolo is pretty crappy and limited now (it had 10-46 before) even after adjusting the spring tension. I’m not into the tuneomatic either. If it had a better vibrato and bridge it would sound even better.

Tim is the best. Not only has he made some of my favorite pickups, he’s repaired pickups, pedals, and amps for me too! Happy to see him getting some love.
The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

Nice! I have a Jaguar pickup that needs to be rewound in addition to my need of Jazzmaster pickups... 🤔

I posted a slightly rambling comment on one of his recent post asking if he's amenable to making a '59ish AlNiCo V set with both pickups wound near each other in the mid-high 8K range. Hopefully he doesn't just think I'm crazy. 😅

If you saw his recent post about repairing a Boss PH-1r, that’s mine! 8)

Nice! He's a man of many talents that I would probably end up annoying a lot with my rampant ADHD tendencies if he were local. 🤪

I'm new here but wow, it's great to see that Tim is doing well with pickups here. I've had him build close to a dozen sets for my guitars as well as customs I've built for customers. His work is top notch.
his pickups are +1 from me
