I had these on a Les Paul and it was a mixed bag. I can tune to E standard, flip the lever to drop D and have it perfectly in tune, flip the lever back up to E and it would never be in tune. I eventually gave up on it and swapped it back to a regular tuner again.

I suppose it could have been defective, but assuming the spring is dialed in correctly, the symptoms you described would also point to a binding nut as the problem (and the Les Paul headstock angle probably isn't doing any favors here either). I'm guessing the Hipshots are one of those things that only works in an ideal scenario, kind of like a vintage strat tremolo. That being said, I've never used the Hipshots firsthand, so take my suspicion with a grain of salt.
