Deoxit: Apparently there's 400 different variants PLUS other competing products? WHICH ONE!?

Post by GilmourD » Thu Sep 26, 2024 6:20 am

I just want to clean out some scratchy pots and every post in every thread I've found googling last night seems to have a different answer with different results, plus discussion about how formulas changed without any concrete results. Different people used the same product and then argued that they had opposite results. And then there's always one guy in every thread screaming that anything more than 10 cents a can is a scam.

So I'm confused.

I'm not working with anything vintage here... Unless CTS pots from the '90s are vintage, now.

So, do I want D5? F5 because it has lubricant or something? G5 cuz of Austin Powers' nemesis Goldmember? Something else from Caig? Something else from a whole different company?

Help me, OSG Kenobi! You're my only hope!

Fader Lube F5 is what I have started using and it worked like a heavyweight champ at cleaning all the pots on a Peavey 260H that looked like it had been sitting in a shed for 20 years. It apparently gums up less over time than others. I don't know how true the hype is and, honestly, I don't think there's a real wrong answer when you're going with actual Deoxit.

Yes I think F5 might be slightly preferable to G5, though I've still got part of a can of G5 so I'll use that up. Certainly sorted a few scratchy pots and selector switches over the years.

In any case it's far, far better than WD40 which I shudder whenever I read someone suggesting to use it on electronics.

Alrighty. What about D5, since that seems to be pretty commonly used, too?

As far as WD40... That's a totally different thing. LOL Water Displacement formula #40 might have been good for guitars that were in the Nashvville floods, but not regular pot cleaning. LOL

Sorry typo on my part. I'm using D5, not sure what G5 is and what the difference is.

Hey Gilmour, are we talking guitars or for amps?

Guitars, although potentially amps. I know the pots in my old silver panel Bassman are just CTS with nylon shafts... Not sure what's in my DRRI... Can't imagine that they're different, though.

Faderlube (or equivalent). Ideally you want something with lubricating properties for pots rather than just deoxidising/flushing solvents.

Regular Deoxit for switches/jacks/contacts.

So... In other words...

Both?

Yes. That's a good price too compared to what we have to pay in .au.

just for reference (coz most guitar advice on the internet is yankee-centric (see: the fact that everyone over here calls valves "tubes" now)) in the UK it's easier and cheaper to get Servisol fader cleaner/lubricant. the brand WD40 sell a specific electronic cleaner/lube spray but i prefer Servisol Super 10

Funny thing is as a Yank myself (I live in New Jersey, not Jersey), the term "valve" actually very much makes sense considering how they work. Tube just seems... Overly simplified. :D

But, yeah, things got confusing after Rocket Chemical Company changed its name to WD-40 Company in 1969.

It could be worse. We could be oversimplifying a large and complex system of underground public transportation by calling it "the tube" ;)
