Alternative for Jazzmaster Rhythm Circuit

Post by gospelfish » Wed Oct 07, 2009 7:07 pm

Recently I was thinking of alternative way to use the rhythm circuit control on a Jazzmaster:

Wire it so that the rhythm circuit is for the middle position with both pickups on. I would then set it so that the two rollers each controlled the volume of a different pickup so that one could tweak the mix between the two.

I like the idea. I think I am one of the few that love the rhythm circuit as is. It's darker. I used it quiet a bit. I love your plan though.

You cant do that unless you use a 4PDT switch, and you cant get them in slide switches like the jazzmaster switch AFAIK, you can get them in mini toggles though.
Providing you use a 4PDT(which is the ONLY way you can do it with one switch),this is easy to do.

Curtis Novak just posted something on his site that uses the rhythm circuit to bring in a hotter tap on the pickups.. Clips sound really cool and it seem like a great use of a circuit not many use ( although I personally DO )

I don't know but it sure looks like it could fit right in.

4PDT Slide switch:

Yeah, I know they exist but not in the standard switchcraft DPDT slide switch style that's used in jazzmastersAFAIK. I've looked for 3PDT ones and couldn't even find them.

EDIT: I found them for you, the pic is of a 4P3T one but switchcraft do indeed make them(4PDT).
http://www.switchcraft.com/products/switch-290b.html
Data sheet on them:
http://www.switchcraft.com/products/pdf ... ematic.pdf

And here's the switch itself from mouser:
http://au.mouser.com/Search/Refine.aspx?Keyword=50212L

(I dont know why the mouser pic is only showing 3 poles when its clearly the 4PDT switch, going by switchcraft part numbers and mouser descriptions.

Switchcraft part number:50212LX
Mouser part number:502-50212LX
Now I know you can get these I'll have to buy some for myself. :)

If you're unsure get the data sheets for the regular DPDT,then the 3PDT and the 4PDT and make comarisons. The data sheets/schematic drawings are all available on switchcrafts website.

This is the main page for slide switches: (about half way down)

Has anyone determined if these Switchcraft 3pdt & 4pdt sliders will fit into a JM w/o having to mod the body?

thanks from John R

Has anybody successfully carried out this mod?

Would love to have a crack at it when I pop my GFS jm90's in.

Well it took Fender 10 years to actually use a 4PDT in a similar way to that suggested in this old thread just resurrected - but just for the two pickups' volumes in the OOP circuit that replaces the rhythm circuit in the Ultra JM. The 4PDT switch they look to have used is the Switchcraft 50212LX discussed here and available from Mouser:
http://www.offsetguitars.com/forums/vie ... &p=1624840
https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Sw ... wqeg%3D%3D

If Fender ever sells the switch directly, its part number is 7716744000. Ultra JM wiring diagram here:
