Antiquity vs. Antiquity II?

Post by jamrine » Fri Mar 14, 2008 1:18 pm

Anyone know the difference between the antiquity I's and II's?

I am getting ready to purchase a set and can get a deal on the I's, but if there is some improvement or difference between the sets, I want to consider that.
Isn't it sad.... I'm immune?

1's are like original 50's style (darker, woody sound) 2's are like later pups (brigher surfier sound) I think the big difference is the magnets. I personaly swear by 1's been using them for about 10 years now.

Never tried A 1's but The A 2's in my MIJ sounds fantastic - and they're a little bit darker than the original ones in my Vintage 62...
Someone knows where I can find the nearest woodchipper to throw my pieces of junk into?

Antiquity I = AlNiCo II magnets
Antiquity II = AlNiCo V magnets.

So as staded here, the Ant I are the 50ties kind. They sound a lot darker and woody. It's a mild mid sounding PU with toned down treble. I would describe it as woody and bassy with great mids and les trebly.
The Ant II as described by SD is a more 60ties sounding PU, More bright, tight bottom and tamed mids. It's a sparkly clean sounding PU and is really close to the original 60ties JM pup. ALthough it's a tad hooter wound.

Both antiquity series use "hand worn down" magnets (oposed to sound like the real thing) And both are hand wounded.
I used both and prefer the II's as being closest to the original imo. But the I's were amazing on their own. they are in the darker teretory.....

I think at least on formite wixed the I and II's in one JM. He used a Ant I at the neck and a Ant II in the bridge. I think then you get best of both worlds. A 50ties neck combined with a sparkly slighty overwound 60ties bridge sound...

As I have plans on upgrading the pups in my CIJ jag....

Does anyone have a clue about the A I and/or the A II Jaguar pups? Is it the same with these? (the A1's are a bit ridiculous though on a jag as it saw the light of day 62...)

Yup, the Ant I for Jaguar also used AlNiCo II magnets. So indeed a darker sounding Jag....
Never heard those. Only played a MIJ Jag with the Ant II variant for a few ocasions. Nice sounding pu's....

this is whats on the Sd website about them;

I wound this pickup hotter for added output and fullness. Like my Texas Hot™, this pickup is both magnetically and physically aged to sound and look like a '50s pickup but with an added punch. Each comes with a specially aged cover. I don't just mold my covers with custom colors so that they look old. The magnets are calibrated and the coils are wound "top going" with North polarity, the same as the early vintage models. Each pickup comes complete with screws, schematics, and vintage "push back" cloth braid hookup wire.
