heavy duty strap pins for new body project?

Post by preservation » Sat Oct 24, 2020 4:59 am

HEJ

i'm looking for some big chrome/nickel strap pins that i can drill into a new JM body.
i always use the Grolsch beer rubber-ring trick, but i'd still like the pins themselves to be somewhat big/flared.

do i just need to find some bass pins? any recs?

note: case clearance shouldn't be an issue since i always use those generic tolex rectangular hardcases.

I've tried these recently, and like them a lot: https://store.duesenberg.de/en/hardware ... ock-endpin

I believe they should be compatble with one of the strap lock systems, but with the screwable bits I'm not really sure they'd be required.

Yeah, another vote here for straplocks. But if you don't wanna do that, then IMO these old Ibanez strap pins are the best thing going:

USA PRSs always had the beefiest strap button's I'd ever seen . I later learned that they simply use round bass guitar string trees as strap buttons. PRS sell their own, otherwise string trees are pretty easy to come by. To date they're the largest non-locking strap buttons I've seen.

This. They're a bit bigger than the average strap button, but more importantly, strap locks. Frankly, I don't know why this isn't considered essential.

+1 on these. The pin have a big flare and work well without the locking mechanism on the strap.

Well-Hung Pro-Pins?

IIRC (Norlin era, maybe?), Gibson used to put diamond-shaped strap buttons, so when you're standing up the longest length is horizontal... It made the pins more secure, while not looking big. You probably can find similar offerings.
