I stripped my 1980 Precision bass back down to wood.

I've had this bass since I was 14 or 15.

When I bought it, it had already been stripped to wood and hand painted with thick shellac.

It also had an active EMG humbucker routed into it. The control cavity had been poorly routed out to accommodate a 9v battery.

I patched the pickup cavity about 20 years ago. then painted the body with white primer and left it at that.

Now I'm in the process of re-patching that hole and control cavity. I'm going to send it off to be professionally finished in Shoreline gold.

I always thought this bass was factory white but I've been cleaning out the pickup cavity with thinners and discovered there's a sticker with the date preserved under the original clear coat. So it it turns out it was black. I'm stoked, never knew that sticker was there. It's like and archeological dig. and it's dated about 3 weeks after I was born.

I am sucker for that kind of stories!
Tell the refinisher to preserve that piece of history! ;)

Yeah, I definitely will. The neck pocket serial number is preserved too.
I think I'll tape the cavities up before I send it off.

Nice! What will be the bridge/tremolo situation here?

Magic! Pat is secretly a wizard, and you'll be able to make the strings vibrato without a vibrato unit.

I am a Wizard, BUT, I'm waiting on a non tremolo 12 string Jag/Jazz plate from Faction.
And the bridge is a fully intonatable TOM style bridge.

Back to the bass.
I found a message I left myself 21 years ago.
I must have known I'd redo this in the future!

Painted this up today.
I went a bit heavy on the black. Need to touch it up with some more red. It's not the best job, there were some stray splatters which I'm annoyed about. But as you can see, I don't have the most ideal setup.

Honestly Pat, I'd just rock that as an almost tobacco burst. Or take the black further and make it a black/yellow burst...

Looking good as always. :D That bass is a great story. I am glad it is getting love. I have my first bass and it needs repairs. Maybe at some point I will do the same restoration. It is the reason I ALWAYS use straplocks on stuff now. I was rehearsing with a group and it fell off the strap and landed on the input side jack and boogered it up. I could fix it pretty easily, but it has sat in its case ever since.
