Re-imagining the Fender Sixty Six. What p/u switch?

Post by javier-san » Thu Oct 21, 2021 9:12 am

I am planning on building a partscaster concierge "Six" body, but with JM/Jag tremolo:

I am going to use JM neck, Jaguar middle and JM bridge p/u. This is where I am getting caught because I am not sure what p/u switch to use? I could make it easy and use a strat 5-way switch, but I hate how it looks aesthetically. I'd prefer to use a jaguar p/u switch, but I am not sure that would on this body and pickguard:

What would y'all do?

You could do a three way for the bridge and neck with an independent volume pot for the middle. This would allow you to "blend in" the middle in any position.

You could also do a three way with an on/off for the middle (pickguard mounted or in a Cobain jaguar plate)

Free-way switch. Looks like a 3 way, but gives you 6 positions (everything but all 3 on).

Also, does this company have a web site? I literally bought a sixty-six just to use and mod the body.

Both of those ideas sound ideal. Thanks y'all!

Use what I'm using for my Strat-type project! 2 3-way Mustang sliders! One for a Bridge/B+N/Neck 3-way, and one for a Middle/M+N/Neck 3-way. What you do is wire the middle and Neck 3-way output to the Neck position of the bridge and Neck 3-way. That way you can EVERY combination of 2 pickups together (B+N, M+N, B+M), all 3 together, and all 3 on their own singly. It's easy as hell to wire, you have the added benefit of having whichever middle or Neck position you want as a "preset option" if you're on the bridge position, and in this case it also fits with the Jag aesthetic!

My Mustang parts build (also from Partscaster Concierge, funnily enough) has a 5-way blade switch on the lower horn parallel to the strings, like those CME exclusive Player JMs. Works well, and with a superswitch I can still get N+B for the JM middle position.

Here's one I made. Which is a complete re-design.

Jeez, that's a gorgeous build.

I really need to get my butt in gear and finish my Sixty-Six project(s). I really love these guitars.

The Jazz bass has no switches, just dedicated volume knobs + master tone. You could try using 2 dual pots

Or a rotary switch!! Didn't think of that.

Ok. Next question.

I planning on going for this look or interpretation of it:

Now, do y'all think a white or even black pickguard would look weird with cream pickup covers?

I would probably move the output jack to the side of the body like a telecaster and then put the switch where the output jack is.
