Re: Bass XII
I can highly recommend trying a 12 string bass - it's a lot of fun and sounds awesome..
This is my 12 string bass. It's a Waterstone TP-12
It's tuned standard Eee-Aaa-Ddd-Ggg (I have also previously tuned 5ths and 3rds instead of the octave for fun)
I've also played an 8 string bass (Ee-Aa-Dd-Gg), and while that was cool too, this thing actually sounds notably cooler
It's a challenge to play, but it sounds amazing....
I've also previosly owned a Hamer CH-12. That was a fairly decent instrument, but suffered pretty bad neck dive.

Re: Bass XII
i played one of the hagstrom 8 string basses a while ago. it was pretty sweet.
doesn't jeremy - pearl jam use a 12 string bass? i'd check but eddie vedder's voice annoys me.

Re: Bass XII
Yep.
And the song "Why Go", also on the album Ten, is played on an 8 String bass (the rest of the album is a fretless 4)
I think Cheap Trick's bassplayer Tom Petersson was somewhat renown for using a 12 string (mine is supposedly his old signature edition - doubt he ever used that model though)

Re: Bass XII
Hamer invented the 12 string for Petersson. He may have played the "stock" versions at some point but his were essentially custom made and I know they differed from production models. One of his old 12s came through a guitar shop I managed about 20 years ago. It was wired for stereo. Apparently the humbucker went to some Marshall stacks and the P Bass went to SVTs. That would be something to hear!

Re: Bass XII
The OP is talking about a bass version of a 12-string guitar, not a tripled 4-string bass.

Re: Bass XII
I know, but these multi course bass oriented instruments are all roughly in the same ballpark. It's all relevent IMHO.countertext wrote: ↑Sun Nov 28, 2021 7:45 amThe OP is talking about a bass version of a 12-string guitar, not a tripled 4-string bass.

Re: Bass XII
Well, that's what he was talking about six years ago. Now it's just kind of a zombie thread living off an appreciation for basses with a set of single or double coursed octave strings.countertext wrote: ↑Sun Nov 28, 2021 7:45 amThe OP is talking about a bass version of a 12-string guitar, not a tripled 4-string bass.

Re: Bass XII
*EDIT to remove my ignorance of the Burns*
I've seen a couple Veillette baritone 12s come up in the markets over the past few years- Ernie Jackson (the only guy I know that has more 12-string electrics than me!) swears by them- sez they sound like thunder. There's one available (no affiliation) on their site:

I have a bariXII on my dream list- maybe soon if the Omicron locks us all down again.
