63 Jazzmaster restoration

Post by Strat-o-rama » Fri May 02, 2008 6:58 am

Hello Offsetmeisters,
I've been watching this forum on and off for a while, and finally decided to become a part of the fun.
Way back in '97 I picked up a violated Jazzmaster for a few hundred bucks that was supposedly from the 1960s. A little rearch at the time indicated at least some of it was for real, and thanks to lots of new info on the web, I've pretty much authenticated it as the real deal. It is missing the original neck, however.  After sitting in a closet for a decade, I've decided to take my time restoring it to a player, and being a vintage buff without vintage big bucks, it would look nice if brought back to its late 1963 appearence-which was a sunburst.
The original pickguard was one of the things I knew was real. They simply don't make them like this anymore. It is a bit wavy/warped, and I'm afraid screwing it down will crack it. Any of you restoration gurus have any tips on how to flatten it without damage?
Also, want to do a new nitro 3 tone burst finish. No way it could be done at my house, so I'm looking to send it out for an authentic to the time period nitro finish. Any suggestions?  I've noticed in pics of originals from '63 that the burst has a bright yellow (AVRIs are kind of orange) center to the burst, but still is not a "target burst" which appeared in '65. I would like to get that '62 to mid '64 style burst.
Sorry to be so long winded. I appreciate any suggestions. I look forward to being a part of he action here!

Do you get a lot of good, hot sun in the summertime?

One solution I've heard about on this forum is to sandwich it between two thick sheets of glass. Clamp them together tightly & then leave the whole thing out in the sun. The heat should soften the nitro & allow it to flatten. I have the same kind of guard but living in London means I see very little sun, well, nice hot sun anyway!
You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.
