faux clay dots (the wood filler trick) - questions, questions, questions...

I plan on doing a couple of linseed oil treatments to my fretboard and figure that while I'm in there - heck, I'd might as well play with the dots as well...
Advice on the work order? Linseed first, then dots... dots first, then linseed...?

To anyone who's already done it (Jonas?) - how have you found the durability of the new dots?
Notice ANY weirdness at all...? After lightly sanding, did you need to seal them in any way?
I wouldn't mind getting some feedback before I go plucking out the plastic jobbies in there now..

I'd say dots first, since they requiere some sanding.
Linseed is superb. Did a JM neck just this week-end and gave it a nice polish with 000 steel wool. Also got some nice shining frets now.
I did some steel wool prior to aplying the linseed, this removed all the grime, then I aplied some Dunlop deep cleaner (alcohol based stuff)
Neck plays really great now, since I also removed the poly and did a "faux" vintage refin on the neck as well.

a tip is to use most fine grained filler you can find, mine look a bit rough...

i agree, probably best to do the dots first and then the oil.

i did this once on an old project Tele with a rosewood neck...and didn't seal the dots. playing and the occasional linseed oil treatment gave them a nice vintage patina.

oh, and when i filled the holes; i didn't just gob some in, i pushed and pressed as hard as possible to make the grain seal very fine like the old clay dots and to eliminate shrinkage as much as possible.
