I need your help, Epi EB-3 involved!!!

Post by Superfuzz » Mon Jun 16, 2008 11:51 am

Ok, in my band some changes are happened lately, the old bassist has gone, and now my singer has started to play bass along with him singin..He has bought an Epi Eb-3 bass, wich is cool as hell and very fast to play but it sounds MUDDY!
We've already get rid of the whole tone/vol harness, leaving only one 500k master volume knob..it sound a bit brighter but the problem still remains..that neck PU is crazy! 30.3kohms make all the amps a fart factory!
So what I want to do for his birthday is this:
I already have a source to obtain a Musicman style HB, I don't know if it's the perfect choice, but I can have it for few euros so it could be nice to try it..the idea is to take the  MM PU, leave the cover and made a new one of the same dimensions of a standard MUDBUCKER wich should hold the MM HB like a JM cover does..
What I need is a good drawing of a Mudbucker with all the necessary measuraments..
Anyone has?

Thanks,
Emanuele.

P.S.
Obviously all the process will be posted here!

:)

You could also try a DiMarzio Model 1 - I have an EB-0 that came with one, and it's got a lot more "snap" than the mudbucker.

You could try lowering the pickup maybe?  I'm not sure of the adjustment on a EB-3, but its probably somewhat adjustable.  If you can isolate the frequencies that are causing the trouble, i.e. bass frequencies most likely...you might try wiring up a "dial-a-strangle" knob in place of the tone.  Basically the Jaguar bass cut switch on a potentiometer to give a passive bass roll off would probably help given the pickup's position.  Also, what settings/amp is the singer using?  A lot of times the new to bass players tend to try the guitar scooped mids thing and it sounds terrible - especially with an already muddy bass design.  Maybe try having him boost his mids and lower the bass would give you more punch and clarity.  The Dark Star pickup is a great one for this application too if you need something that has great tone but is probably near the cost of the bass.

well, the problems with this PU are two:
one is the excessive output, having a 30,1k PU means overdriving all the amp you find..then the more you go with the windings and the more you get it mud, so it's impossible to cut truh the mix with it, especially if the guitarist plays with a Big Muff ( :P)

We've thought about the Di-Marzio model one but it's actually impossible to find it in Italy  or Ebay..

Maybe your local DiMarzio dealer can order it, or maybe you can order it from some German dealer. It would probably take a month or two though.
