It's a sensible solution, but I'd need to destroy (or commission) a warmoth neck to get the hardware - I don't think the parts are freely available.
I believe these are made by Gotoh.

So maybe if you want a side adjust truss rod you could get one?

Just a quick one:

I cut a notch out of an old neck template to allow me to chop out space for a spoke adjuster with a 3/16" bit and my 30mm guide bush. I wanted the corners as tight as I could without having to chisel them.

Before:

After - the notch is 3/8"x1/4" - the spoke wheel will be 1/2" wide:

Then I gave it a squirt of primer:

It doesn't leave a great deal of pickguard between the spoke and the pickup, but it's enough for it to be fine and not look ridiculous.

I just noticed... isn't that neck pickup WAY higher than the neck, meaning that even the highest action would make the guitar fret out on anything past the 12th fret? :o :wtf:

The blocks on the fingerboard are a good indication of what stage in the project that pic was taken ;) That first guard was routed for WRHPs I think; I made him another to fit the JM pickup.

I've just received this in the post:

Image

I've been hunting for a decent synthetic MoP for fingerboards for a while, since it's impossible to get thick enough real stuff for 7.25" radius fingerboards. With the first MOTORIK I managed to get some that was just thick enough for the 9.5" board, but I couldn't find any thick enough at the size needed for fenderish blocks this time around.

This is a very hard polyester substitute 1/8" thick, and although the pattern is a bit too regular, it should cut up randomly enough to be fine at the size I need it. The colour and texture is great, actually nicer than the new white MoP I've used before, and it's thick enough to be used at any radius with a good thickness.

Supplier is http://www.ivoryalternative.com/pages/k ... ndles.html - they do different colour variations, too: some a bit more sandy. This is the white MoP

That looks exactly like one of the samples I got from Masecraft when I ordered my Recon Stone slab. They call that one Atlante or something like that. But there was a third kind of synthetic that was just labeled "poly pearl" and at first I thought it was rubbish, but I used it anyway and now I really like it.

I tried to order some from Masecraft (based on your recommendation ;) ), but they said they were out of stock and directed me to this company in the UK - they used to own them I think. It's the same product.

Andrew - wait 'til I start laying my pearl in the slots before you start on the innuendo...

Masecraft was out of the Recon Stone? That sucks, hopefully they will have more soon enough. I wanted to mention the Poly because when we spoke previously you had found that and was considering buying it until I recommnded the Recon Stone. I told you how I thought the Recon Stone looked better, but now I think it could be a toss-up. The Poly pearl does look very nice.

Yup - don't know when they'll have it in, but the guy who got back in touch with me thought the poly might be better for this purpose. I don't know how well the recon stone sands down. I'd like to see some, though. It doesn't seem to be available in the UK, and it is a lot more expensive :(

Got the bulk of the guard done today. Made a template using most of the outline of the MOTORIK 1 guard: shortened the control area and the area just over the trem, moved the upper control are forward a bit to cover the cavity fully, then cobbled together the pickup and switch/roller routing using the old template and a jag one:

Image

When I put it on the body to do the truss slot I found I needed to lengthen the body's pickup cavities a little for some reason. No bother. I shuffled the template around a bit to make sure the cavities were about 1mm wider than the guard's holes all round.

Image

I'm going for a black anodized guard - just managed to squeeze it out of the offcut from the JM guards I'm making for forum folks:

Image

Cut very roughly with a special aluminium bit on my jigsaw. I don't like doing this - there's always a chance of bending the guard. The routing puts a lot less stress on it:

Image

Outlines routed smooth. There are slight chatter marks along the edge, about the same as on Allparts gold guards, but I'll smooth that off before it's finished.

Image

And this is my setup for cutting the switch and roller holes, and the reason for the oversized routing on the template: I use a 10mm guide bush and a 1.25mm carbide bit. It works a treat on plastic guards, not so easy on aluminium. It sort of melts its way through, but gets there in the end. Leaves nice rectangular holes with only a tiny radius in the corners.

Image

I've drilled and countersunk all the holes now - just some tidying up to do around the edges, and some corners to square. Once I have the other three JM guards finished they'll all be off to the anodizer to get coated. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

I have the metallic flake for the lacquer now, and it looks the business, very fine - on with that real soon. I also have everything I need for the neck, so no excuses there, either...

:) :(

This guard solves a problem, too: I've been so wrapped up in my top secret plans for my next build I'd forgotten to be excited about this one, and it was starting to feel like I just needed to get it done and move on...

...but, I've just finished the raw guard and I thought I'd just check it all fits...

Image

...and I'm officially very excited now! Need to get some white Jag covers, but I think I have that sorted.
