Shielding tubs arrived today, courtesy of Jazzprod (thanks again, Dan) - miraculously, my cavities were exactly the right depth for them and they fit in without problems. There's a few gaps where I adjusted the routing to my '68 template, but nothing untoward. Do the flaps I've hammered down from the control cavity go under or over the pickup shields, by the way? Need to get that right when I come to nailing things down.

The colour looks really dark indoors on a rainy day, more like a metallic british racing green or something:

Sun came out later to allow me to get two more coats of clear done, and I took the opportunity to replace the original split-shaft pots I had with solid-shaft jobbies.

beautiful finish. i think it would look best with a gold anodised guard personally, the contrast between the shielding and the body looks so good.

as for the flaps i have them over the pickup shields on my jazzmaster. the shielding in it is from a early 60s JM and it was clearly soldered that way before, so i assume thats the correct way

White witch hats and a white tip pickup switch would be :?

But that is Gilmour-esque...

Nice!

Flaps from tub go over pickup shields on all shieldings I've seen (incuding my two vintage ones).

:)
Someone knows where I can find the nearest woodchipper to throw my pieces of junk into?

The body was chosen to fit the guard, not the other way round I'm afraid, but I know what you mean. Reserving judgement on the knobs until the neck is on.

I figured as much with the shielding - thanks for the info.

Those white covers on all of that black reminds me of these guys:

Very nice look.
I finally finish building a guitar, go to play it, and then remember, "oh yeah, that's right. I suck at playing... Why did I build another guitar again?"

Holy shit Ben!! That's looking great!! I wouldn't change a thing. I'm loving the amber switch tip (sniffsniff).

I'm assuming the neck will still have binding? That'll be more than enough white to balance out the pickup covers. Those black witch-hats look perfect.

I wish I had enough cash to sort out my Ultrasonic. I'd be straight over to your place so you could get a closer look at what needs doing (and I'd get a closer look at your 2 projects!!)
You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.

And blocks ;)

No rush on coming over - you should wait until this one is polished and assembled.

I figured this had cured long enough, since I'd done the spraying over quite a long period, and had sanded a lot between coats, so I treated myself to an evening of wet sanding and polishing :)

Started with 1200, wet sanding with white spirit (naphtha), which did the bulk of the work, taking the finish down until it was entirely matt with no little glossy speckles left:

Image

At first it didn't seem to be doing much, and the paper sort of skidded across the lacquer, but then as the surface became more matt it started to bite more, until the liquid went thicker and started to 'suck' the paper down. I took that as a sign I should stop and check progress.

Image

I used 1200 then 2000 paper (have run out of 1500), then switched to 6000 and 8000 grit micromesh cloth, still on a small block for the front and back, polishing by hand on the contours:

Image

Then I polished it with T-cut colour restorer, which is a slightly abrasive car polish:

Image

And finished off with a dry cloth:

Image

Same treatment on the neck:

Image

Just about ready for assembly. I need to take some lacquer from the sides of the neck pocket before I do anything else - the heel would probably go in, but I don't want to risk it chipping the finish on the way back out.
