I'll post some final pics and specs soon, this is just a quick update to let you all know that she loved the guitar. I had brought over my little Yamaha THR10C so she could try it out. To her great delight, she was absolutely nailing the clean tones on Siamese Dream songs with the Blue Lace Sensor.

I also gave her a few cheap pedals that needed a new home. As it turns out, she was looking for a Rat, wanted a new delay, and was having issues with her overdrive pedal, so she should get some good use from these.

*edit to add that everybody loved the cookies I made too. ;D
Excellent!! :w00t:

Didn't cross my mind that you could raise kids on Smashing Pumpkins, since my nieces and nephews aren't really there yet age/interest-wise... All too cool!
Jazzmaster project (got a body, placeholder neck, some pickups and ideas)
Tokai Telecaster Thinline with Creamery Pickups Filtertron and Tapped Tele

I finally took some pictures of Mercury 003 all finished up.

I've had a bit of trouble with the neck on this one. First, I sanded the transition in too close to the nut and didn't leave enough material behind the nut. What material was left was too fragile, and broke off, so I had to approach the nut a little differently and it's a weird Fender/Gibson hybrid approach. Later during initial setup, I discovered that I couldn't engage the truss rod with the appropriate wrench. I'm not sure what exactly, but it was bound to happen to me eventually.

Since the initial set of 10-46 strings didn't create enough relief, and I couldn't adjust the rod, I decided to set it up with a set of 12-62 in a drop C# tuning (drop-D half step down) which gives the neck enough relief to play nice. I don't have a dedicated drop tuned guitar, so I'll use this one for that, for a while. I'll also use this as the impetus to revise my neck building techniques going forward. I'll probably use this guitar as the test mule for some experimental necks after I get my shop set back up. I spec'ed out the pickup for a different type of player than me, so that will get changed out someday soon, to something more like a superD, and less like a JB.

Going forward, I'm planning on making a few revisions to the body as well. I'd like to standardize this shape on a standard 24 fret neck that I could get from an OEM. I'll also want the option of using locking vibratos, like a Floyd. I'm planning on moving the jack to the rear side, using a strat jack cup and I'll also want to plan out a spot for an optional battery door, by the jack.

Anyway, pictures:

I love these, and may I compliment your beefy strings for that tuning!
But also, please don’t use a strat Jack plate, they’re so awful

What if I turn it upside down? Based on my US public school education, if I turn it 180 degrees, it would become awesome. The thought is the jack would face up toward the strap button. The first one I made had the jack on top, which was okay, this side position I used here is kind of awkward though.

I'll make at least one with a strat jack, just to try it out.

I know what you’re going for, like those Charvel pro mods.

I know it looks smart and all, but what’s so wrong with the input jack being on the pickguard, or on the side like a tele?

Yeah, pretty much like that, though that does indeed look awful, how they've done it.

Nothing wrong with having the jack on the side. The spot it is in now isn't good though. If it stays on the side, it'll have to move. I don't mind a jack on top, as long as it isn't in a plastic pickguard, or directly through the wood.

Anyway, nothing is decided yet. I'll probably do a new prototype with some different options mocked up to help figure it out.

I particularly like the headstock design of the black guitar, well done. The grainy finish of the green guitar is cool too. Is that done with the 'ceruse' technique?

Also, fwiw, I really like it with this headstock shape from earlier in the thread:

Thanks!

The finish is super simple. I sprayed two coats of color directly over the Ash wood, then 2-3 coats of satin clear. I let it cure for at least a few weeks, then assembled it.

It was halfway to a ceruse finish. I think if I had filled the grain with black after clear coating, then sanded back and clear coated again, it would be ceruse.

I have another guitar that I finished the same way in yellow, in another thread. They are a bit of an experiment, to try for a simple finish option that will wear through a bit quicker, for people that like a worn look, but don't like "relics".
