Re: getting some lacquer on this JM---FINALLY!!!
Very good point! That's the key to a good final finish....proper preparation of the body surface first - sand the body level, dampen it and sand level again, prime, sand lightly, primer if needed, then color, sand between coats, clear and sand between each 3 coats. I use dupont chromabase color coats, which is very, very thin. If you miss something, it will show like nobody's bizness.

That thing's a beaut! Blue guitars are great, and Daphne is one of the best.

Re: getting some lacquer on this JM---FINALLY!!!
photos to come... but i got a little tired of dicking around with the nitro, not having the temperature, the place or the humidity to shoot... so....
i worked on the neck, tinting it with a nice water-based stain, then 12 coats of hand-rubbed teak and tung oil. Doweled many holes on the body that had changed over the years, installed the klusons, then thought of all my buddies who have been dying to play Daphne (2)... so i installed the neck and strung the damn thing.
Holy. Crap.
This is essentially a nitro thin-skin finish on alder body, and a Musikraft neck with an oil finish....... it is VERY resonant! when i have a bit more time, i might just level out the finish on the body and stay VERY thin. this guitar sounds like a million bucks!
i put on d'addario chrome flatwounds (11's)

MAN!!! That thing is gorgeous! (Sorry, just now seeing this thread!
) Is that pickguard cream (or parchment)? It seems to match the pickup covers quite nicely! I always thought mint was beautiful on Sonic (or, in this case, Daphne), but I never liked the way the pickguard didn't match the pup covers. That looks really good. If I wasn't such a sunburst fiend, I'd definitely have a Sonic or Daphne Jazzmaster!!!

Re: getting some lacquer on this JM---FINALLY!!!
thanks guys!
i might hold out for an extra special ERA 60's tortoise guard.
it's daphne blue- not a very manly colour, but i am ok with that.
the guard is avri mint. the covers are actually cream, i think. the sun made them look close, but i like the contrast

Fantastic! I almost went with Daphne (I even have a can of ReRanch here) but went with the IBM. The pastels are such cool colors. Great job!

The Musikraft neck is very stable. I gave the rod a good turn and mounted the neck, strung the guitar, and the curve on the neck is perfect after 3 days-- not bad!
it's a brazilian rosewood board, chunky C 59 contour, 1.75 inch nut for big hands.
i used Allparts locking Klusons. BOY, would i like to get my hands on a set of original Single Lines...
That, and a PAT PEND bridge.
the string tree is from my 1978 Tele.
I'll have to get some lacquer on the headstock so i can add my J Shine decal---------
