BOndo works but if you missed by a lot it might not be strong enough.

Or take some srapes of wood, preshape them and glue them in and correct the shape. A lot of work but it does the job. I did this once to an overlarge neck pocket. A days work, but worth the effort. Will do it again on a future project I have, where I need to "fill" some caveties. Perhaps joined with bondo?

Perhaps this is a good a time as any to ask. What exactly is Bondo? I googled it and got a compnay making all kinds of products... I'm guess you all mean just one specific product from that range, right?

Well see Fuzz_King's project . . . that will shrink over time.

Bondo's not a glue, and if you use it in conjunction with glued-in wood, glue the wood with carpenter's wood glue. Bondo forms a strong shell and has adhesive properties. The best way to do it is to glue wood in there and fill any cracks with bondo and apply a thin layer of it over the whole area, then sand it down.

Hi Block! When I saw your post I was going to suggest and inquire about epoxy wood filler. I saw some the other day that I think is kind of new. It is made by Elmer's (The glue company). It is a 2-part, wood epoxy that is wood-colored. The package says it will not shrink, and it dries pretty quick.

What brand and type of wood epoxy did you use. Was it the 2-part type?

Has anyone tried the Elmer's 2-part wood epoxy?

I use 2-part epoxy wood fillers all the time and whenever I've seen cracks appear around it it's been because the wood has shrunk, not the filler. It hardens chemically, all at the same time, not because of solvent evaporation, so there's much less chance of it shrinking.

Air-drying wood fillers shrink because they dry on the outside faster than on the inside, and because they wet the wood, making it expand a little then contract again after the filler is dry. Only good for thin surface repairs, really.

I think that you can do your job with any 2 based epoxy wood fillers  ;)
