Quote time from USACG?

Post by PitchShifter » Sun Mar 16, 2008 5:52 pm

Hi Guys,
I recently sent in a request for a quote from USACG. They quickly responded overnight to my initial Email and said that unfortunately what I ordered wasn't possible.  I replied that they had misread what I had requested in my specs and asked if we could now continue with my request for a quote. A couple of days went by without word, so I emailed the Sales team again just asking for clarification if my order was still under review as I was now uncertain.  So it's been a further week and I haven't heard anything from USACG and I'm getting a bit bummed out.  Now, I'm not about to slag anyone off here, I just want to know what is the normal lead time for a quote to be provided on a guitar spec? Should I just relax and be patient?  One of the reasons I chose USACG over Warmoth was the ravings about the customer service. Unfortunatley, I'm not in a position where i can make an international call to speak directly to them.

I think the way their system works is that the guy you deal with (I delt with Rob Stone) needs to talk to the guys in the factory is the spec you have asked for is out of the ordinary  -  he may even need to talk to them anyway for normal spec'd orders.

They then need to work out the cost and paperwork and then will get back to you with the spec (written in their internal ordering language) and once you've OK'd it, they'll send you a PDF of the order and work out how you intend to pay.

Should take about a week I suppose ...

Remember nothing is done "overnight" and you may well be the 10th person who has phoned in/emailed an order that day....

Yeah, you're right.  I was just unsure how the process worked.

After spending months putting things together I can wait a bit longer!

Did you try calling them on the phone?  My quotes from them in the past go something like this...dial phone...ask them how much whatever I'm looking for would be...they tell me if they can do it and how much it will cost instantly.

What are you trying to have them build that's so out of the ordinary?

Nothing out of the ordinary, I don't think. It's not a custom design or anything. Standard body and neck. A few personal tweaks.

I'm not in a position to call long-distance international, unfortunately.  That is the frustrating part of it.  I just wanted to get an idea of the process from those who've gone through it.

I'll leave it a bit longer to see how it goes, but I've already started spec'ing out a Warmoth build, if need be.

I'm in Australia and usually when everything is sort of finalised to confirm the quote, Istay up till 4.00am and "talk" to Rob  (the guy I deal with at USCG) via lots of emails  ...works a charm

I'm in Oz too, and that's how I'll likely proceed.  Just waiting for the quote. If it works for you, it should work for me  ;)

They seem to offer way better options for the necks than Warmoth, but they don't offer as many types of wood, body styles or headstock shapes.

What kind of tweaks?

I want an Offset dot inlay and a J Bass pickup routing for the middle position.  Unfortunately the latter can't be done using the programmed routs, so it will have to be a custom job, should I still decide it's worthwhile.

Just spend $100 on a dremel and you can do any routes you want:

this is what the standard USCG Bass VI body looks like (routed for 3 strat like pickups):

After dremel and wood filler, now routed for 3 jaguar/bass vi style pickups and extended pup slector switch route

You can get pickup routing templates (for regular router) cheap from Stewart McDonald, the thing is, it's probably not worth buying a router if you're only going to use it for one pickup and never use it again.
