Re: ThePearDream's Talman Projects
I'm curious about which bridge you used for your TC420. I was thinking about changing the two point bridge in mine for a six screw strat trem.
I'm concerned about the bridge sitting too low. How did you overcome that?

Re: ThePearDream's Talman Projects
I don't recall specifically what bridge I used (it came from my parts box), but it has an import string spacing & GFS block saddles. As far as bridge height, there isn't any adjust-ability for that with six screw trems - it all needs to happen with the saddles and neck angle. FWIW, I only used a six screw bridge because I had to, I would almost always prefer a modern 2 point trem. You should try switching to a better 2 point trem before making a permanent switch to a six screw unit.

Re: ThePearDream's Talman Projects
Thanks for the quick response. With the current two point setup, the bridge rests a couple of millimeters off the top of the guitar in order to get proper string height. My concern being the six point trem would sit right on the top with no gap, and the strings might be too low unless I adjusted the saddles beyond their usable limits.
I really like what you did with yours and I prefer the six point trem(I don't use the trem much and would prefer the stability while also occasionally using it as a trem). I just don't want to mess it up.

Re: ThePearDream's Talman Projects
In a case like that I would shim the neck pocket on the end closer to the nut, tilting the neck forward slightly. That will result in an increase in string height, allowing the saddles to be adjusted lower.hardtail01 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 23, 2018 7:01 pmThanks for the quick response. I actually had to do this to my TC620. Even with the 2 point tremolo, I didn't have enough range of adjustment without using a shim.

Re: ThePearDream's Talman Projects
This is basically a ThePearDream Talman project so I figured I'd post about it here. I was so enamored with Doug's purple flake Talman that I asked if he'd make a bound Talman body for me and he agreed. The body, pickguard and control plate arrived today. The body binding and pickguard are cream so there's not a ton of contrast in the mock-up pics below. I'm also going to use Doug's design for a "double single coil" pickup cover and I'm working with Jason (Shadoweclipse13) on a wiring plan that will put all the knobs and switches to good use.
I'm really impressed with the quality of Doug's work. The woodwork and sanding on the body is top notch and the pickguard, control plate (actually made out of metal!) and binding are done with such precision. There are some incredible luthiers on this forum.
Here's a few pics with the Warmoth neck I'll be using and the swatch of the color green I'm planning to go with:

Re: ThePearDream's Talman Projects
I made an extra pickguard for Mike's project above, and was curious about how it'd look on mine.
Behold the J Mascis Talman!
Mike, your pickguard is ready btw .

I really like this Tallman design. It's a pleasing shape with plenty of room for wiring options.

Good to hear I'm not the only Talman fan out there. But never played one. Do they handle like a strat / Tele? They look like an easy mod and build.

Re: ThePearDream's Talman Projects
Being an offset, they do feel different from either a strat or tele. The shape is a bit of a Tele/Jazzmaster mix, while they feel and play like a Strat built with a Mustang body. It's worth noting that anyone who can't get past the location of the volume knob on strats, won't like a Talman. The newer reissue models will be easier for modding, since there is less proprietary hardware, and I feel that the overall quality is higher in these.
If anybody is on the fence, look at the TM330P.
-Alder body with red sparkle finish
-Locking tuners & bone nut
-Straight pull headstock without a string tree
-Fretboard is bound in matching wood
-Great upper fret access
-Easy availability of custom pickguards these days
-Can easily be found for under $400

Re: ThePearDream's Talman Projects
Great advice, cheers...had my eye on these as a potential low cost mod option, but for some reason they are way overpriced here in Australia, around the $400-500 mark for run down old 90s models, which will go close to a newish Squire. I see Ibanez is cranking them out again, so hopefully more reasonably priced ones make it to market.
