Tailpieces: Marr, TVL, Am Pro

Post by El Reclusa » Sat Mar 02, 2019 8:15 pm

I'm hoping to get an early production Swope Descendant tailpiece on my Jazzmaster build, but failing that...

Are the Marr, Troy Van Leeuwen, and American Pro tailpiece the same? I have a TVL on my partscaster Jag and love it, and I'm wondering if the Marr and American Professional tailpiece are the same, since the bridges are similar? The TVL is basically a Staytrem and I super dig it, but they don't ship to the States anymore and TVL hardware is harder to find now compared to the year or so ago I built the Jag.

Hopefully I can get the Descendant, but if that takes longer than expected I'd like something acceptable in the meantime.

Those 3 trems are different.

TVL has the 0054466000 trem which is the same as AVRI and American Original ...

The Marr is 0091913000 and somewhat unique.

The Am Pro is 7710479000 and has screw-in arm ..

Hmmm. The TVL I have installed on my Jag has an arm that seems to stay put much better than expected, like the Marr/Staytrem ones. It's been awhile since I had it off, and I can't recall what the collet looked like but I just assumed it was "better" than an AVRI because it works better than any of them I've encountered. Interesting. Still going for the Descendant if/when but in the meantime I might need *something*. Maybe the AVRI is just fine?

The Fender parts manuals do say that the 0054466000 trem is on the TVL and AO and AVRI62 and AV65 (and possibly others ?). But the 7702080000 bridge (Marr-like: Mustang-style, anti-sink bushings; but brass saddles) is unique to the TVL AFAIK.

There are several TVL trems that have been sold on reverb that look to have the right push-in collet for the 0054466000 (see below). I guess it's possible that there could still be variation in 'fit' ... in the collet or the arm itself ? The tightness is probably even adjustable with a pair of pliers ?

Yep- those all look like mine as best I can recall. For being stock, there's very little play in the arm- it stays where I leave it, which is fine by me.

The TVL saddles appear to be plated if they are indeed brass- but in any event they work well and sound good. I have a Musicmaster with a set of compensated brass Tele-style saddles that I love, so I thought the brass TVL would work well on the Jag build. I was correct.

I'm using a bridge from a Jazzmaster on a Jaguar, and I'm about to use a bridge from a Jaguar on a Jazzmaster...and both are actually variations on a Mustang bridge. This amuses me more than it probably should.
