Copper shields.

Is it normal for a CIJ jag not to have the copper shielding plates in the body cavities? I had to run about 50 miles (figure exact to nearest millimetre) of wire back to the tailpiece to earth all the control plates... Does anyone know of a better way of earthing it?

unless there's something wrong with the stock wiring, the plates should already be grounded via the pots and switches.

Jonas, I think spook's questions is actually whether there are plates or no plates in the CIJ gtrs ..... rather than whether the plates are wired.
In the CIJ Jaguar I recently purchased it had no brass plates at all and every earth (seemed like dozens of wires) all went back to teh volume pot.

I thought as much... I thought maybe the previous owner had taken them out and stashed them in his room somewhere... I've had to raid it for parts a few times already... Cheers..

sorry if i was being unclear. no japanese offsets have shielding plates (i've never seen one that had them anyway), but my point was that adding all that wire makes absolutely no difference, since every metal part on the guitar is already grounded. well, except for the pickguard screws and strap buttons...
just make sure that the wire from the tailpiece to the back of the volume pot is in place, this is what grounds the strings.
so i guess what i'm trying to say is; if you think the guitar is too noisy, add shielding plates/tape. just adding more wires won't help.

I had to earth the control plates themselves to the volume, though. I was getting a horrific buzzing noise...

Well, the MIJ Jaguars had copper/brass shielding plates. They switched to black grounding paint when they switched from MIJ to CIJ.(different factory I was told. Rumour has it that CIJ are build by Tokai?)
For some strange reason only the MIJ JAguar had Shielding plates. I have a '93 MIJ JM that has no shielding at all

Not even the conductive black paint....
Those old MIJ Jaguars were wired almost like the vintage ones and grounded at the bridge post as well.
I saw these shielding plates in a "93 and a "95. My "04 had the black paint instead.
