What's going on with this bridge?? (SOLVED)

Post by jas24 » Thu Oct 08, 2020 2:42 am

So I'm working on building a replica of this guitar (firebird body, jazzmaster neck and trem), and I'm stumped as to what's going on with the bridge on the guitar I'm trying to replicate...

Here's a close up pic:

First glance shows it's clearly a mustang, but looking towards the base, it looks like an adjustomatic/TOM thimble?? Also the bridge is bolted on.

Any ideas on what's going on there? Can't say I've ever seen anything similar before.

Looks like the old Jag/jazz/stang-o-matic trick.

That's must be it - haven't come across that one before - cheers, that's a really big help!

Actually, this is an interesting take on the usual mod. The nut on top prevents the bridge from rocking, but it also prevents the centering problems that have been my experience with this mod (it would never return to tune after using the trem). If you lube up the saddles well enough, this could be a nice alternative, assuming you have an ABR-1 style bridge.

Yep - what gave it away? Ha! :P

I've always thought it looked like a cool guitar, and for the last ten years or so I've been compiling photos, details etc - now I'm FINALLY actually getting around to the build.

Attempting to be as faithful as I can to the original, and Grant's been kind enough to get back to me with a few details, I'm completely out of my depth and learning as I go, but hopefully it'll come together okay!

Been a Feeder fan since I first heard them in Gran Turismo 3. That very guitar was on the cover of a compilation of theirs that I came across and it blew my mind. Firebird body and block inlay neck (I assumed a Jag)? How do you get that to work? Aren't FBs neck through? I was young and it never occurred to me that you could file stuff, adjust for scale lengths, or eve go full custom.

Suffice it to say I can't wait to see how this turns out. Best of luck with the build!

It's neither a Fender neck nor a Gibson body. It's a custom build by a Japanese company called Combat.

Yeah, these-a-days I'd figure it'd have to be. At the time the idea that someone could just make you guitar parts that look like the brand ones was an alien concept. I assumed he pulled apart a few guitars and slapped them together a-la Blackie. I also wondered if that meant he had a Jazzmaster with a Firebird neck kicking around somewhere...

That would be a good look I think. Too bad Gibson doesn't use bolt-on necks so we could try some designs out...
