Mustang tremolo set screw replacement: spring plunger

Post by skern » Mon Oct 19, 2020 4:52 pm

Hey guys. I have an idea for a mod to replace the normal set screw arrangement for my Squier Mustang whammy. There are a few issues with the stock arrangement, namely 1) the screw mars the whammy bar and 2) the screw/arm becomes loose. People have attempted to fix it with various solutions, like using a small piece of rubber, using a small spring, and Fender's idea of having a nylon bushing around the whammy.

Anyway, I think I found something which will fix all problems nicely and cheaply: a nylon-tipped spring plunger with thread locker. The nylon will protect the arm and provide better grip, the spring will push against the arm so it doesn't loosen, and the threadlocker will prevent it from backing out. What do you guys think? The only thing is that they're like 1/2" long so it'll stick out a bit from the tailpiece but that's irrelevant to me.

That's a pretty neat solution! Bummer they don't come in shorter lengths.
