Mean Green Mahogany Jazzmaster

Post by HNB » Wed Nov 18, 2020 7:20 pm

I saw one of Spitfire's green pickguards online for sale and remembered how neat they were but I didn't have a project to use the guard with. Then I saw a candy green MJT mahogany body and the deal was done. I am going to use the Mojo Tone Knockout Jazzmaster P90's and 500k pots to kind of set it up like a Gibson. (Since it has a mahogany body and p90's.) I have a maple V strat neck coming in. :)

I shielded one coat so far.

Then I use my chisel to square the bottom of the tremolo rout. Tomorrow I will drill the bridge post holes and tremolo mounting holes.

The green pickguard is super cool. The relic job on the body is ridiculously bad though. It looks like someone wanted to strip it and gave up after an hour.
Should be a cool combination, but with the relic like that, I'd be back to the drawing board personally.

Edit: Just realized what the guard reminds me of. Palak Paneer. Still love it.

Nice canned passive aggressive response. Did I log onto Reddit or TGP by accident?
Good thing, we've been posting here for over a decade, and are well past comfortable being honest, and sharing opinions.
There is hardly a build thread in here without a critique or two.
I know, this will likely end up decent looking regardless, because Chris does great work.

I like the green on green, but I do agree the relic job is bad. The wood has no grit to match all that wear. I've had good luck mixing pencil graphite with water and rubbing it into the wood to make the wear more realistic

It has clear over the mahogany. I might try my ebony stain to darken the wood areas and see if that helps. The wear doesn't bother me. I agree it isn't the most realistic wear, but should be fun still. :)

Sorry for being harsh. I am a fan of HNB's builds, because he likes to throw traditional aesthetics out the window.
I don't always love every element, but he really nails the overall look he's going for every time.

Love the pickguard! You have a really cool build going & who cares what other people think. I would put that Jazzmaster together as fast as I could to play it & let it “relic” the natural way.

Yeah, that relic job wasn't very artful, but that green guard is fantastic and will probably carry the "weight" of the bare patches by the time it's all put together, as it all but carries it as is.

Green tort is best tort, or something. Outer space tort is also super neat.
This is an excellent rectangle

Thank you! :D

I used some minwax ebony stain on the back bare spots and it darkens it pretty well. Once it is dry, I will do the front. It should tone down the bright color of the mahogany. :)

Totally true comment that I don't usually go for traditional. :D Spray paint runs, scraped up bodies, stamps, stickers. :D I like lots of different looks for sure. :D Just thought it would be fun do do a candy green body with a green pickguard. It is going to be themed off of the song "Rainbow Connection." I am most familiar with the Muppet version and it triggers the warm fuzzy nostalgia. :) The logo and plate with be themed off of that. :)

Here is how the back is looking. I didn't take a before picture, but the wood color was the same as the front. Much more brown now and it brought out a little flame in the mahogany. :D
