The headstock finish is darker than the rest of the guitar what can i do?

Post by samytv » Wed May 07, 2008 1:00 pm

Hi,

I have a 1969 jazzmaster with polyurethane finish on the neck except the headstock that is finish with nitro due to the fact that poly finish didn't work well with the decal.
I'd like to know if there's something I could do to make my headstock looking less dark?????

Definitely leave the finish as-is.  Nobody will notice it, and any mods you make will reduce the value of the guitar.

I love those tuners, too!  :-* :-* :-*

The thing is that ALL the Fenders from that age looks like that - because of the finish process - (as said - they used nitro on the headstock because of the C-type decals - the poly didn't work) and if you want your 69 jazzy to look legit you should leave it as is. You can always sell it and get anotherguitar that is finished in a different way from a different era....

Hi,
I did'nt have in mind to modify it, I want it to stay all original like all of you said.
I was thinking of a way to clean it but I don't know how (warm water or something else).

It's not dirty (not more than the back of the headstock anyway) - it's only that the type of nitro laquer they used in that period yellowed to a more orange hue than earlier nitro - that turned more regular yellow) - so I don't think anything will happen if youtry to rub it off.
