White Witch Hats That are Actually White?

Post by adamrobertt » Sun Nov 29, 2020 8:57 am

I have a '65 Thin Skin. It came with the new repro white witch hats, which I think look totally fine... but I just put a parchment guard on it, and it has Kinman pickups which have whiter covers than the one that came on the Fender pickups, so now the knobs in comparison look yellow.

Anyone know where I can get some reasonably accurate white witch hats that are actually white in color? The pots are solid shaft so they'd need to be the set screw type, which might make things more difficult...

Not come across any proper white ones, what about darkening the covers slightly?
Ive had some success with Tinted Nitro rattle Laquer.
The beauty of this fix is you can go as light/dark as you like. Image

Yeah, darkening the pickup covers is probably the better way to go. What's funny is how this is a total contrast to all the "these AV 65 witch hat knobs are TOO WHITE" posts we used to see.

Try soaking the pickup covers in tea/coffee for a while.
This is an excellent rectangle

The problem is I LIKE how white the stuff is. I don't like the weird fake yellow plastics on a new guitar.

They do look fine. They're nice knobs. And i never had an issue with them until I put on a white guard. I have another JM with the same knobs on tort and they look great.

The whitest witch hats I've ever owned came from EY Parts, but like you noted, they're press-on knobs for knurled pots.

If you care this much about whitening the knobs rather than darkening the pickup covers, I'd just put some knurled CTS pots in and use those. I've seen some witch hats sell for more than the combo of CTS pots and Chinese knobs, anyway :D

I ended up buying some Kluson white witch hats that look decent. I'm going to drill them out and install a set-screw. SHouldn't be too hard.

That's the ridiculous thing. The best and whitest white witch hats are... vintage ones that actually are 50+ years old. Bright white. None of this terrible piss yellow stuff Fender keeps shitting out as 'aged white' parts.

I bought a pair from Jay a number of years back. I think they still pop up for sale from time to time.

I know! Idk about the rest of Fender plastics, but the stuff on Jazzmasters stayed pretty damn white over the years in my experience.
