1972 Fender Mustang - Competition Yellow/Orange Refinish
Hi Guys!
Heres my first post (except the introduction) on this forum.
i'm buying a 1972 Fender Mustang that's been refinished in vintage white with a lot of patina to it. before that i had my eyes set on a competition yellow/orange colour mustang around the same age, but unfortunately was too late to buy it. my idea now is to repaint the white guitar in that same colour. as it's already been refinished, i don't feel bad for changing the colour... what do you guys think? any opinios?
also was wondering about it there exists a blueprint or measurements of some sort for the stripe design. or should i just go by eye?
is it possible to do a decent job by myself or do i absolutely have to give it to a shop to repaint? i already contacted some shops and the firt that replied had an offer almost as high as i pay for the whole guitar so...
looking forward to this project and your opinions!
cheers guys!

You can use Imgur.com to upload photos. Pretty easy to do on mobile, just copy the phot and post it between the ][ when you click the image button

I can see the pictures by using the link but if you want them to be visible in the actual board, all you have to do is to click on the "insert image" icon on the toolbox and then paste the image's address in between the inner brackets.
You can take also take advantage of the "preview" button to see the outcome before submitting the post.
Now onto the competition stripes, this video tutorial will provide all the information you need:

Is definitely possible to do a decent job by yourself if you take your time and try things on scrap wood until you'll feel confident enough to do it on the guitar body.
Worst case, you'll have to strip and re-paint

hey Amon!
Thanks for the reply! I tried to copy the link between the img icon inner brackets but somehow it didn't link the pictures correct... well i guess i have many oportunities to try better again haha
and thank you for the video! pretty cool when you have an original as template, unfortunately i dont so would go by eye comparing to the fotos so far. also i would have to do the basis colour (yellow) as well, not just the stripes... and with just rattle cans... does that turn out nice? or anywhere close to original?

i was also thinking about leaving the body as is for now and see if i can find a replacement body that already has the colour.. but the original 70's ones are probably ultra rare and why buy a reissue when i already have an original 70's body? hmmmm...

i actually really like the aged finish they did on the guitar... maybe its a shame to overpaint that good work... will have to make the decision when i actually hold her in my hands...
what do you guys think so far?

I’d leave it as it. Would love a beater mustang. Sadly I’m left handed & you just can’t get an old one for sensible money.
I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion?
