Just remember that much of the Rick sound comes from spacing the pickups far apart, and particularly by putting the bridge pickup as close to the bridge as possible. If you centered the pickup in a JM rout, you'd be too far from the bridge to sound like an actual Rick (if that's the goal)
here is the pickguard I'll be using, the bridge pickup does look fairly close to the bridge itself, should do the trick.

considering chucking a teisco middle pickup ala Robert Smith in there as well, I have a few of those surface mount models I could use.

Probably the only redeeming feature of the Ric I owned was the High Gain pickups. They sounded IMMENSE with overdrive and distortion - interested to see how this turns out.

What year model was the guitar? From some quick googling it seems there might be differences between pickups from different decades, but I guess it might be a question of different people interpreting what they hear as well ofc...

So I got my pickups, pickguard and electronics, set about today wiring it all up and getting it installed. Its all finished but I'm taking it into work tomorrow to do some setup stuff on it. The height of the pickups can only go so far so I need to adjust the break angle to compensate (its already quite high so it won't be a problem).
Here are some teaser shots of the pickups in place and the MUCH neater than stock wiring all finished!

Tomorrow I'll finish off the setup and then post some picks of the finished guitar!

Looks like an AM Pro II in Mercury finish.

Correct, it is indeed an AM Pro II in Mercury. I was going to change the electronics anyway since these come with really poor messy wiring and the V-Mod pickups are good but not great and not much like actual JM pickups.

Well! here it is! The Rickenmaster 8)

Its sounds very Rickish I must say, I used 1m pots and a .022uf tone caps to compensate for the lack of a maple body and they definitely have a bit of jangle. The neck pickup has way more low end than the bridge so I may install a filter cap on the neck pickup just to filter a bit out and balance the pickups a bit more. There is a definite colour scheme going on with the Silver and Black, I love it!

So does it have that Young Marble Giants sound you might expect it to?

From memory it was early '90s. I bought it used in 199? 620/12 if that makes a difference.

Horrible guitar. Straight traded for a brand new CIJ Jazzmaster in '05 so not all bad I guess.

I never knew the footprint of a Rick pickup fit a P90 cutout, that's pretty cool!

Looks awesome. Would love to hear how that sounds.
