Duo-Sonic Reissue Repairi job

Post by ShakeYoHips » Mon May 19, 2008 10:11 pm

Ok, I have an early nineties duo sonic that is in pretty bad shape, but i want to fix it up and have a couple of questions i figured someone could help with.

the pickguard is cracked, but i think i know where to get one from (WD music).

the tuners were bad to begin with, but i'm not sure if the tuner holes are standard size or not. id like to upgrade these bad boys. same goes for the bridge. also the switch is a lil weak, but i figured i could maybe get one off ebay or warmoth.

lastly, there is a large hairline crack that runs the entire length of the back of the guitar, which makes me hesitant to dump too much cash into it. my plan was to remove the pain by sanding it, then "filling" in the crack with glue or something then repainting it. I use ""'s because the crack is really only visible and doesn't appear to splitting the wood yet.

any help or suggestions for any of these repairs is more than welcomed.

OK. Pickguard can be replaced. Not sure if the RI is the same as the original Duo Sonic II pick guard.(best specify RI when you order one) or have some custom cut.
As for the tuners, I looked at some pics and it's hard to tell. The originals used Klusons, But it looks like the the Ri uses some kind of "Grover" alike tuner? (like on the Mex std strat?)
Best is to measure the shaft of the actual tuner + the ferule. If it's a treaded ferule, then the Kluson/Gotoh/Shaller (or whoever has lookalike Kluson tuners) won't fit.

I guess the crack is just the finish, possibly due to temperature/humidity. I'v seen this on other guitars as well. usally the body itself is not splitting.
