I am super excited to have this coming to me from Austria.

Barn wood pine with a Japanese Shou Sugi Ban finish. It is a Japanese method of treating the surface (the wood is slightly charred with Shou Sugi Ban (Yakisugi) technique, but without burning. Carbonation occurs and the wood gains a very special surface structure.)
Natural earth pigment sealed and finished with oil, shellac and wax. The process is super cool.

Here are pictures. :D

I am talking with Justin about getting a custom steel pickguard made for it. I am going as different as I am able to with this one. I am super excited about it.

Very cool. I like how the contours follow the grain lines.

I find this body to be super inspirational for ideas. I ordered an all rosewood neck for it. I think it will fit well with the body.

For sure, that will look amazing. Rosewood and Wenge are what came to mind when I saw that finish. Super interesting texture to it.

The neck came in and I got to finishing it. I know you don't have to finish rosewood, but I think it looks nicer with some finish.

Also my tuners came in. Going for rusty to go with the barnwood look.

Cool project - how amazing is that body? Damn.

What did you finish the neck with?

I saw that body come across my Reverb feed. :) It will be interesting to see what you end up with.

That finish is just unnatural enough for me to overcome my aversion to natural finished guitars. Kind of wish it was coming to me!

The neck looks really nice too, especially after the sheen you added. This is going to look great when it's all done.

I am using tung oil on it. I like to use it on the necks I do because I don't do super thick finishes on them. I like the neck to still feel sort of like wood, but be protected from moisture. :)

I can't wait to get more pieces in so I can see how they look together. :D

Wow, that rosewood really looks incredible with the finish.

Do you know if tung oil is a compatible finish though? I've always heard that rosewood takes to many finishes poorly, because of how oily it is.

I'm not sure if it means that water-based finishes don't stick (oil and water), or if oil-based finishes break down (from the wood's oil seeping into it).

I'll be curious to see how it holds up. Tung oil is so easy to apply, and you got such a beautiful end result that l'll definitely be keeping that combo in mind for future projects.

I have used it before without issue. Time will tell. :) It absorbed a lot with the first two coats but I also do then pretty thin so they dry well. I don't know if there is any compatibility issues with it and rosewood.

Maybe it is working because the neck was pretty dry? It sucked it in. Also it is from a can so it isn't pure tung oil. Maybe that helps it work?

Neck is done and the tuners are mounted. The nut hasn't come in yet.
