Daphne Blue/IBM Jazzmaster Refin. Pic Heavy FINISHED!

Post by Spitfire7 » Mon Sep 18, 2023 5:53 pm

Hey guys, its been a long time, but IM BACK and need some help with my refin project.

To start with, this is a VM Jazzmaster so its a fun throw around guitar so it doesn't have to be perfect. About 10 years ago I did this fun white and orange tort combo. Chris HNB helped me with the idea of the tan lines and the correct color to look like its a nitro aged white. It has been a blast and a great kick around throw around guitar over the decade, but its just not doing it for me anymore. I think the relic job came out great and it even gained a lot of its own authentic wear and tear. Literally when I was moving I tossed it into the back of the truck in hopes it will gain more wear and tear and It looked great.

I have always loved the Daphne blue with orange tort. I used Duplicolor rattle cans for the first refin and it worked out perfectly. What color would best match a Daphne Blue?

Chris HNB, I'm hoping you will join us in this discussion. You actually painted my Jaguar a long time ago and gave me many pointers for this JM project which turned out great. You do awesome work man.

Let me know which Duplicolor is closest to Daphne Blue. Thanks.

I should note, I will leave the headstock white. I think that will be pretty cool and unique.

Which do you like best, the Sonic Blue, the Daphne Blue, or the Sea Foam Green?

That looks great! I normally go into AutoZone and O'Reilly's and look at what the caps look like to pick a color. :) Online they only seem to sell metallics for some reason.

Hey Chris, welcome to the thread. You've seen my Jazzmaster before right? It was like 10 years ago, but this right here was all your help from before getting those tan lines and then sanding off a little for the white undercoat.

Have you done a Daphne blue before?

I used ADH method whenever I did tan lines. I sprayed the light color first and then taped a tracing of the guard and plates to the body and sprayed the darker color over. That gives the look of it having lighter paint under the parts.

Sounds like daphne blue is what you want and that's great. Daphne blue is one of my all-time fave colors. If I had to decide what works best with your fantastic vintage faded orange (big fan of the Crazy 60s Vintage Faded Orange myself), honestly...

...the olympic white really looks the best to me. Your Jazzmaster looks fantastic as it is currently. However, I appreciate when someone wants a change. My personal preference if you're dead set on making the change in order:

1) I think the seafoam green is complimentary to the orange pickguard. I briefly had my Spitfire pickguard on my new seafoam green Vintera Mustang...but ended up going back to the stock traditional pearloid... The richer, saturated seafoam green I think is competing with the equally striking orange.

2) The subtle sonic blue works well with the vintage faded orange, letting the pickguard be the focus.

3) The heart wants what the heart wants so go for the daphne blue. Like the seafoam green, I feel the richer, saturated daphne blue is competing with the striking orange.

FWIW, the three color finish options I like paired with your vintage faded orange are:

1) Olympic White

2) Fiesta Red

3) Black

Dude! Great post. Thanks for putting all of that together. Yeah I totally know what you mean about the sea foam green. I was thinking the same thing.

I actually had a VFO on a sonic blue and it almost looked too white in pictures. Some might say best of both words. However I saw a Daphne with orange tort a long time ago and I haven't been able to get it out of my head. I never saw myself being a Daphne guy, but ever since I had a sonic with red tort on I a while back, I've always kind if missed it.

You might be right with the Daphne competing, but I think I gotta give it a shot. Shoot if I don't like it, I can relic it and let the aged white come back through. That could be kind if cool. Thanks for your reply.

Oh, and so cool to see those Spitfire's again. Awesome!

Hey Chris, how many cans or reranch does a Jazzmaster body need?

Also, will the reranch be good enough polished up, or do I need a clear coat?

Lastly, I already have some nitro clear from Stewmac, will that play nice over reranch or since its nitro will it conflict and cause issues? If it will work, how soon after should I apply the nitro stewmac clear over the reranch?

Hey Mark! Figured I’d jump in here, you’re actually doing a pickguard for me currently.

I’m not sure if ReRanch is still in business. But you can try Gracey’s nitro or Great Lakes Custom nitro. I would say about 2 cans. Although it likely only needs one I would say 2 is your best bet in case there are any hiccups.

There shouldn’t be any issues with using Stewmac nitro clear over it. Scuff up your oly white, spray your Daphne blue, and then clear. I’ve done color and clear on the same day, but depending on humidity you may want to let the color sit for a day or so. I also have sprayed color and just put a couple coats of clear to protect it while it sits for a few days, and then do the rest of your clear. 2 cans color and 2-3 cans clear should be enough! You should definitely do some amount or clear that way you can have something to polish -Glenn

I didn’t know reranch was down. That is good to know. I agree two cans of color should be good unless you want it to wear through faster. On the same note, clear is good, but if you want it to wear to the white faster, you can go one can of blue and one can of clear so it isn’t as thick if that makes sense.

Since ReRanch was more offline than online during my projects, I went with Gracey's Vintage Finishes for multiple projects with success.

Here' my process FWIW - it's by no means the end all/be all, but if it's of any help. I welcome far more experienced finisher/refinisher folks to share what works for them. :)

1. After scuffing the current finish, I usually do 3 (sometimes 4) coats of the finish about 10 minutes between coats.

2. Then I do 3 (or more if needed) coats of the finish (30 minutes between coats).

3. Then I leave the body to cure for (for me) at least 4 weeks. Some cure for less time, some cure for longer. It may depend on your local area weather and humidity.

4. When it's time to wet sand, I start with 2000 grit, then 3000 grit, and then 5000 grit. Sometimes if I don't have the exact grit preference, I deviate slightly with what I have on hand (i.e., 1500 grit, 2500 grit, etc.). I use warm water with a drop of dishsoap in plastic bin to allow the wet sandpaper to glide smoothly with less residue buildup.

It may be fine using the Gracey's paint with StewMac's nitro clear. Something to consider, though, is that I've usually find it best to use the same brand for both finish and clear. Sometimes, different brand finish and different brand clear can have unfortunate chemical reactions - to quote Chris from Texas Toast, "Ask me how I know." :wtf: :fp:

If things go wrong, it's not the end of the world - simply sand back down and start over with compatible finish paint and clear. Good luck! 8)

Thanks guys so much. You've all given me some great tips.

What do I do about wood filler? There are some pretty bad dings in the wood that go deep down.

I've got both down the street. What clear coat do you put over these so they don't react? Will this still check? I'm hoping to eventually have checking.

Back in the day I used Deft clear from Lowes or Home Depot. It is nitro so it dries slow and reacts to stuff like Gibson guitars do. More lately I have used Minwax poly clear or satin. It dries FAST and doesn't react to stuff.

I have an update. Ages ago I saw a Jazzmaster somewhere with a faded orange pickguard and what I thought was a Daphne blue in my memory. Well, I found those pictures again and it wasn't a Daphne blue. It was an Ice Blue Metallic. That's what I was going for. Ironically as I was at the auto parts store looking for a close match to Daphne blue which they didn't have, I came across almost a perfect Ice Blue Metallic. Pretty darn close and if not, still a really beautiful and cool color matched with a faded orange tort. So that worked out well. This is going to be awesome!!! To me, that's a really cool color combo. Super unique and a really pretty color in general. Can't wait. Last pic is the color next to Lake Placid Blue.

I will keep you guys posted with picture updates.
