My new Jaguar HH - A parts-guar

I am in LOVE with this guitar!

I got this body from an OSG member a while back. Then last week I scored myself an older Japanese made neck. I don't know what year it's from because someone sanded off the Made in or Crafted in part and the serial number. At least they refin'd that section nicely so you can't see it.

I bought a custom 5-ply pickguard. I think this looks a lot better than the 1-ply solid black that the HH Special originally came with (which i never had anyway). It really enhances the sexiness of the jaguar design.

The pickups are some custom made HBs i had made about 17 years ago! They were made by a guy named Kevin Smith aka Smits Pickups. These are Low-Wind pickups with A2 magnets and no potting. The neck is 6.2k and the Bridge is about 7.4k. They sound like slightly fatter single coils and the guitar still sounds like a jaguar. Sadly he's no longer in business. All the pickups he rewound for me were the best I've ever had. My Duo Sonic has '69 pickups that he rewound and they sound like vintage pickups. He also rewound some '59 JM pickups i had years ago. They sounded better than the Fralin and Novak rewinds I had.

The pots are 1meg for volume and 500k for tone, .022 uF cap. This combo gives me a nice balanced chime-y clean and articulate overdrive. I do have the strangle switch engaged but most of the time I don't need it (will be great for recording tho!). The rhythm ckt is not wired in but I'll probably use the switch for an out of phase option.

I've got some large cosmo knobs on it for now. I might switch to normal Jaguar/MXR knobs. Strings are 12-52 tuned Eb atm for our show next week.

Side Question... Does anyone know when Fender Japan stopped using the "silver" dot inlays? It has those and the profile is a slim C like the older necks. It could be an early to mid 90s MIJ neck but there's no way to tell.

Thanks Yannis! I really love it.

I just got back from rehearsal. I used my '76 Deluxe Reverb. The HBs still sound like HBs but more clear and defined. Using the strangle switch helped but what I settled on was using the Bright mode on my Duncan Vice Grip compressor and no strangle. That gave me the chime i needed. THis is a great guitar. I've had about 5 different vintage '60s USA jaguars but I prefer the Japanese ones. There's probably a nano difference with them using metric measurements in the design that just works IMO. Same thing with Jazz Basses IMO, Japan>USA

That makes me feel good about the Japanese Jazz Bass I got from my old bandmate. :D

Action is really high on the damn thing though. Think I need to take it to a different person than the one who set it up.

At least the late 2000s, I think. My 2008 CIJ Mustang has the silver dots, and I want to say my 2013 MIJ did as well, but I sold it a couple years ago and I don't have any photos of it that clearly show.

Interesting. I wonder if it’s different with the jazzmasters. I have a 2006 CIJ JM neck and it has the plastic off-white dots

Beautiful! And the rosewood on that fretboard is perfect. Quite a looker.

Thanks everyone, I just love looking at this guitar. It’s plays like a dream too. People want to buy it from me already but it ain’t for sale!

Update: The pickups are okay. They sound different with different amps. It’s never bad but it’s not always amazing so I think I’m going to change them soon. They can sound bright and chimney with my Deluxe reverb and then kind of dark and bassy with vox style amps. I expected the opposite.

The body came with a custom set of Novak ‘61 Gen.1 Bass VI pickups. I tested them in another body (a Strat) and they sound amazing. I think that’ll be the move.

I’m not sure if I’ll use this or my JM at the show this week. They’ll battle it out at rehearsals on Monday.

Does anyone know how fender Japan gets their rosewood fretboards to be so smooth and waxy? I remember sometime in the 90s and tech told me they used this stuff called kitten wax.??? But always assumed he meant fender USA. But the USA fretboards are never waxy and smooth like the Japanese necks.

I need to change the pickups in this thing. It's good as-is but it could be better...

Is anyone here experienced with the Fralin Twangmasters?? I'm considering getting those, 2% underwind for the neck. What say you?
