DIY Mahogany bodyJazzmaster project- DONE!
A few years ago I got some nice old mahogany slabs from my previous employer.
These sat for about 30 years in his warehouse, as a safety protection mounted to a outside of a double door that served as a loading platform.
After he installed a staircase, these beams were no longer need and destined for the bin.
As these slabs were around 10 feet, 2 inches thick and 9 inches wide, I said I have a use for them. So he said, sure, take 'em.
I held on to these for another few years until I went to an opendoor day of my sons school.
They had a huge wood work shop and I started tallking to the teacher and asked him if he could plane and glue the mahogany slabs.
He said sure, just bring the slabs and we'll do the rest!
Wood turned out to be beautiful. So I knew I had to make a Jazzmaster out of some of it.
This is how the project currently stands,
Raw mahogany body, mated with a Fender MIM Jm neck with Gotoh tuners, AVRI trem, gold guard and a set of Pickupwizzard Jm pu's.
All parts were bought used and collected over the last few years.
neck was a steal. Truss rod adjustment screw was sticking out of the heel of the neck. I saw the add on a local used site and it just kept there.
So I contaced the seller and we agreed on a price. Neck was brand new, but had a "problem" as he said it would not fit the neck pocket straight due to the adjustment screw sticking out.
So, I took my chanches and bought it anyway. After some research it turned out it was an easy fix. Turned out they added to many washers between the adjustment screw and the truss rod. Took one out, reassembled and problem solved
This thing plays beautiful, sounds really good and is a blast to play. Couldn't be hapier with the outcome.
Now the only problem is, how do I finish it.
I was able to match the grain somewhat (it's a 3 piece body but looks like a 1 piece body)
So now I'm thinking it looks to good to cover with an opaque color...
Ideas are very welcome!

Looks great!
If it were mine, Ceruse would be the only thing on my mind!
Or maybe Silver Fox:
And you can’t go wrong with TV Yellow (and black pickups, anodized black guard?!):

Thanks for the reply.
TV yellow and a black anodized guard.... Hmmm I can relate to that
Can't go wrong with that indeed!
Ceruse doesn't look bad at all. Not sure about the green.
Been thinking of keeping it natural, but then indeed with a black anodized guard.

That's a possibility for sure.
I happen to have some cans of Nitro paint and I think that one of them is white blonde.
Have to delve into doing a paintjob like that. But in combo with the old gold guard it might be nice!
I'm currently working on a Maghony DIY Hallmark Swept Wing short scale bass.
It's a bit too heavy, so I'm gonna chamber it as there is plenty of room under the big pickguard.
Most likely I'll finish both this and the Jazzmaster in the summer.

The jazzmaster looks the business.
Recommend a clear finish or just leave it as it as.

I love custom built guitars that have their own stories to tell! Although, I'm not sure if I want to be reminded of my boss and work every time I play

I left that job about 2,5 years ago.
He was a cool guy, so I don't mind.

Re: DIY Mahogany bodyJazzmaster project
I got a tort guard from a project that I did for a friend of mine.
Might go with just a clear coat and either the tort of the gold guard.
I'll keep you posted.
But first I have a few other projects to finish....

Re: DIY Mahogany bodyJazzmaster project DONE!
I finaly got arround finishing this one!
I made a few changes as I aquired a very cheap Squier 40th anniversary Jazzmaster .
Body and pickguard were rattle can spayed over after the attacking the body with 80# gritt sandpaper....
But luckily the rest of the guitar was in pretty good shape.
I just got the guitar as it was much cheaper buying a used B&B neck. I decided to transplant all the Squier parts onto the mahogany body.
After puting clear on the body I realised how nice the wood looked. I just could't get myself to cover it up.
The figuring of the wood is really nice imho. It also reflects differently is the light changes.
I opted for a high gloss, bit tacky perhaps, but it kind of looks "posh" now
Now I ended up with a pretty sleek Jm in my humble opinion. Very 70's, I think the gold hardware from the Squier works with the mahogany body.
It first I found it looked over the top, but after a few days it kind of grew on me.
Normally I can't stand gold hardware, but on this one, I guess it works. Reminds me a bit of a "yacht" or "80's furniture" kind of look.
I have to say the Squier B&B neck is really nice. I even managed to set up the trem up to a point it works quiet well, stays in tune and doens't make metallic clicking sounds when using it. Also to my surprise, the gold guard and the stock squier pu's work really well with the mahogany body.
It has these "glassy" Jazzmaster sounds. Also the rythem circuit sounds kind of lush...
It's strange how different it sounds with the mahogany body vs the stock Squier poplar body.
Gonna keep the Fender neck and the Pickup Wizzard set for another project.
Anyway, enough talk...Time for some pics!
