templates!? please help me...

Post by Professor Plum » Wed Sep 10, 2008 12:01 pm

does anyone have or know where to get a template for a JM body? i really want to do a JM body in my wood shop class

[i thinking a JM jr. out of mahognay with 1 p-90 because in the woodshed under tons of wood a found this huge really old pice that i think the gods hid there to be turned into a guitar...)

if i was to do a body in shop from class how would i go about doing the conturs? any info, tricks, tips, ect would be AMAZEING, i have all year and am pretty good in wood but dont have any experance with this and my teacher wants a good plan before i use the really nice wood (undertandably) so id like to have enough of idea of what im doing to to appease him and auctually do a really nice jorb on it.

thanks alot for any help, you guys are the best... -Plum

You can download mostly accurate line drawings of a Jazzmaster from the Support page at Fender's website.  The .pdfs can be scaled to full size, a little tweaking will be required and you'll have a full-size drawing of a Jazzmaster.  You can use that to make a plywood template that you would then use to flush trim (with a router) the actual body.  Obviously there's a lot to it, but you can acheive some pretty primo results.  A few of us around here have done it, so by all means feel free to ask questions.

sweet! thank you! so once i made a plywood template and have a JM shaped slab of wood of about the right thickness, whats the easiest way to do the countours? should i just basically draw the arc where the tummy cut is and throw it against the sander for a while untill its shaped out? is there any trick to draw and/or route it to make the rounded edges and stuff more accurate?

basically any tips on how to do the stuff to shape it after i have the basic cutout would be awsome (or if theres a good project thread that would be helpful, that would be cool) as thats what im kinda unsure about and the more i can show my shop teacher the better [he kinda dosent really want me to do a guitar because kids in teh past have tried guitars and failed, so i wanna show him i have some kind of plan...]

thanks alot for the tip about the fender site btw...

;D ;D ;D

Ben's Motorik thread is every bit as good (if not better because he's farther along) but I thought mine was a more Jazzmaster-specific.

Though I cheat - I have a man who magically turns my emailed drawings into 1/2" MDF sheets - that's why I'm in front  :D
