P90 recommendations?
I want to put some p90's in my SG because the humbuckers sound pretty lifeless and I've always loved p90's. It's a 90's SG special if that matters. Does anyone have any experience doing this mod? Recommendations for p90's? Recommendation to have someone build me a pickguard to accomadate the new pups? Any other advice for this mod?

I have installed GFS Dream 90 in my Jagmaster. I think they sound awesome. They will also fit to the original pickguard.

Yeah, those Artec/GFS ones are pretty decent.

Lollar will never fail you on single coil pickups.
Wolfe MacLeod winds great Gibson-style pickups, as well.

Re: P90 recommendations?
I have fralins on my Les Paul spesh. I like them just fine. I've tried Lollars too. Didn't like them as much as the Fralins: the Lollars are a bit more refined and cleaner sounding, more hi-fi, if you will. Some people love that though.
I also have a melody maker that has a new gibson P90 in it. In my opinion, the gibson P90 is a bit thicker sounding and more mid-rangy than the fralins. Muddier too, unfortunately.
The GFS have a good reputation, and they are considerably cheaper than either fralins or lollars (which are 160 and 180 bucks for a pair, respectively; I don't know the price of the GFSs, I just know they're cheaper).
As for the conversion to P90s: it's more complicated than it looks. Here's a web page on the subject: http://www.everythingsg.com/howto/p90conv/1.html

You could install P90s-like pickups that have been conceived to fit into a humbucker slot. They generally don't exactly sound like P90s, but they'll get you close.

Cool Link Kilgore, I definately am ready to take on the project. I knew there would be some routing involved, the rest seems pretty basic. I think I'm going to order some pickups this weekend. Thanks for the help guys!

Re: P90 recommendations?
i did the same mod to my SG special, and i used GFS P90s. i ordered the pickguard from dazbootman. my advice would be not to place the neck pickup too close to the neck, as it weakens the neck joint.Slow-Pop wrote: Does anyone have any experience doing this mod? there's more detailed info in this thread: index.php/topic,9381.0.html (long read, but it answers a lot of questions)
edit: actually, read this first: http://www.everythingsg.com/howto/p90conv/4.html it pretty much tells you everything you need to know about the mod.
