Project: Budget Awesome Jaguar - BAJ (in progress)
Ladies and gentlemen!
Allow me to introduce my latest undertaking...
BAJ
aka
Budget Awesome Jaguar
Background
I'm in school full time and therefore not working so my funds are super limited.
I sold off most of my gear. I've been lusting over a sunburst Jag forever.
After seeing Pat's 70's Jag (black guard + old sunburst) I couldn't take it anymore.
I sold more crap and took out the credit card to get this project rolling.
I already have a tiny bit of buyers remorse after mounting up my credit card with the expenses but this will keep me happy until I move again in June. Also the expenses will be reduced as excess parts will be sold off on eBay, read below.
Inspiration
Pat's Jag
Kurt's Jag
Oliver's Jag
The Goal
Put together an awesome SB/black guard Jaguar for under $400
BAJ
Electronics Explained
Think Jazz Bass but without a tone control.
No switches. Each pickup will have it's own volume control.
The top switch plate will be a dummy; ie no electronics.
Pickguard Explained
I've had a mint green repro pickguard sitting around for years that no one bought the few times I posted on eBay for under $25. I'm ghetto-sealing the bottom switch plate cutaway and painting the pickguard black.
Current status
I already have some parts laying around from previous projects and the rest of the parts are on order.
1. Body - En route via Paul
2. Neck - I put an entire CIJ BB Jaguar on my credit card and I plan on selling off the parts and keeping the neck
3. Electronics - I bought a fully assembled Strat pickguard with Lipstick pickups. Will use most of the parts and sell off the rest (pickguard + extra pickups + knobs)
4. Plates + Trem - Coming via eBay
5. I have tints and lacquers left over from my previous projects, hopefully just enough to cover BAJ.
All the goods should be coming in next week.
I already started experimenting spraying a two tone sunburst.
Here is my first attempt on an old acoustic: http://twitpic.com/1czg59" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Stay tuned for updates
In the meantime chant with me to follow along

I'd be sorely tempted to put some kind of fuzz/distortion in place of the rhythm circuit.
I LOVE the project BTW. I toO have lusted over Pats old 70's sunburst, I like a bit of Oliver & blame Kurt for my fabulous music taste!

You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.

Series/Paralell perhaps? Just as an option.PorkyPrimeCut wrote:I'd be sorely tempted to put some kind of fuzz/distortion in place of the rhythm circuit.

BAJ!
By the way, when you said you wanted to practice your sunburst I thought: Antigua!

Yeah, I wanted to post a picture. But (A) I wanted to get my post in quick for the free tunes and (B) I didn't want to sully up your thread with Antigua pics, just in case you weren't a fan. Some people take that shit seriously.
For the record, I love Antigua.

Same here. Antigua is awesome! Especially on the acoustic and coronado above.
Sadly I don't think it fits the Jaguar that well. The chrome plates, the pickups and the pickguard throw off the "ghost" effect.

I think that Jaguars and Bass VIs are "pickier" about colors than any other guitars. Certainly all of the chrome.

You could put tone pots in the rhythm circuit and made the switch bypass, just a thought.

I like the ideas of adding cool electronic stuff but sadly it'll take this project over the budget.
If anything I'd love to have an on board delay unit
