Re: What's on your workbench right now?
Am I crazy in imagining that the neodymium pickups would sound very "forward"/clear and punchy and possibly mid-focused?

..no, you not!
Right on spot for the music he creates.
In case he doesn't like it, I will wind him an alnico set

The ones I've messed with (the Tom Anderson ones) have been definitely forward and punchy, but not particularly focused on any one frequency -- they sounded massive, felt super responsive to my touch, and (on the TA ones anyway) were honestly a touch scooped in the mids, kinda like a PAF-y sorta profile. Not lacking in mids by any means, but they had a lot of bass and treble as well. Plenty hot too, but in a "play hard and fry your preamp, play quiet and clean up nicely" rather than a "AIN'T NO BRAKES ON THIS GAIN TRAIN" kinda way.Shadoweclipse13 wrote: ↑Mon May 17, 2021 1:55 pmAm I crazy in imagining that the neodymium pickups would sound very "forward"/clear and punchy and possibly mid-focused?

when it comes to magnets vs. winding (aka resistance) is stronger magnets will sound cleaner and distort less than a similar output pickup with higher winding.

Very interesting. I think I wouldn't mind having a bass with some neodymiums...

Well mine is off the workbench now, which means I can think about my next project: Refinishing my Player Jaguar in Candy Apple Red. However, this 'simple' solid colour finish took me much longer than I expected and I had a few problems along the way, so I may leave the Jaguar for a little while yet while I recover.

I built an EQD arrows clone today, and I've got parts coming to finish up a DOD 250 and an Acapulco Gold pedal. Just waiting for op amps.
This is an excellent rectangle

Re: What's on your workbench right now?
Finished up the Zebrawood/Maple short scale baritone conversion neck and installed it on my IBM Jagstang-done-right (replacing a vintage style Allparts).
This neck turns it into a 27" (er 26-15/16" actually) scale. I've set up in C# with a set of Stringjoy super light baritone strings (12-58). This yields roughly the same string tension as a 10-52 set in standard tuning on 25.5". I also upgraded the vibrato to an AVRI and the bridge to a Squier Classic Vibe. I'm still dialing in the setup, but it's feeling pretty good. The zebrawood was hard to capture with interior lights, but it looks great in person and I love how it looks with the IBM. I'm going to plug it in in a few minutes and check out how these Surf90s sound in C#.

Re: What's on your workbench right now?
Thank you very much. I'm really pleased with how it turned out.
Unfortunately I'm going to have to start my CAR refinish on my Jaguar sooner as it slipped out of my gig bag (still waiting for a hard case to arrive ) and I took a chunk out of the poly on the bottom edge. I have a heat gun coming this weekend and at least I have everything I need to do the Jaguar; grain filler, shellac and the various gold/red tinted clear/clear coat nitro. I might fit a bone nut while the neck is off as well.

Re: What's on your workbench right now?
Mixed (kind of) and sprayed this myself. I got a new spray gun but added a few too many drops of amber tint. Figured I would finish it anyway even though the tint is a little too yellow. I use way too much polishing compound so the routes are pretty gross right now.
Starting the wiring this weekend. I have some copper plates so feeding all these wires through the cavities is going to be fun
