Help me turn my wife into a guitarist. (Warning: Potentially cheesy content!)

Post by spacecadet » Sat Feb 02, 2008 10:46 pm

My wife has suddenly decided she wants a guitar for her birthday.  And she's really excited about it.

What started her on this kick was the current comeback tour of one of her favorite 80's bands from when she lived in Japan, X-Japan.  Their lead guitarist, whose name was "hide", killed himself some years ago, so this tour is stirring up all sorts of emotions among their fans.  She wants to play just like him, and she wants his guitar, which is something called a Fernandes MG-145 that he had painted.  She doesn't care so much about the paint, but she wants the guitar.

This is that guitar:

Yeah, cheesy, tacky, whatever.  Looks like a BC Rich Mockingbird, right?  With maybe some modifications...

My question is, *is* it a BC Rich Mockingbird?  Google tells me nothing.  The Fernandes version costs more than $1,000 (plus shipping from Japan), but I can get a Mockingbird locally for $399.  I'm wondering if there's some cross-licensing or manufacturing deal between Fernandes and BC Rich.  I showed her the Mockingbird and she was unimpressed, because it does not say "Fernandes" on it.  She's unconvinced they're the same, though I suspect they are.  It's not so much the brand name she cares about, she's just concerned about whether the shape, neck and weight of the guitar are going to feel like what hide played.  (I can tell the neck is different between those two pics, but there are different models of Mockingbird.)

Anyone know for sure?  This is basically a starter guitar and I don't know that she's going to play forever so even she thinks spending $1,000 on it is a little ridiculous.  She'd almost convinced herself to settle for an Epiphone Les Paul but I'd like to get her something closer to what she really wants if I can.

Yeah, that's a Mockingbird. Change out the hardware for gold, find a Fernandes decal from somewhere, then get a five year old to eat a pack of crayons and barf all over it. Bingo.

Incidentally, there's a good chance that the guitar she wants has a Sustainer pickup in it...  :-\

Well now she actually *wants* the Epi Les Paul.  She's read that they're easier to play, though she accepts that the BC Rich is the same guitar as the Fernandes.  She wants to get the actual Fernandes as her "second" guitar someday - I don't understand that mentality but I guess it's the same as people who buy artist "signature" guitars.

(I'm thinking it'll probably never happen anyway, and that LP will eventually be in my hands too :) )

But thanks for the help.  It did help convince her that the Mockingbird is the same guitar.  I told her you guys know what you're talking about.

Can I recommend, if you're going with an Epi Gibson copy, that you go for a G-400 instead of an LP? The G-400s are great guitars for the price, and if you change out the pups for a couple of nice 'buckers (or better yet, a couple of SD Phat Cat P90s), you've got one hell of a guitar.

have you been to a local music store with her? maybe she could try out an epi LP vs a G-series or something.

my ex-girlfriend took an interest in parts-casters when we first got together and since she knew how to play a bit, we both thought it'd be cool for her to have her own parts-caster.she had no idea about pickups or necks or anything, so i showed her a few different guitars from my own fleet and she realized that a lot of the parts are actually different, especially necks.

PLUS, she got frustrated after about a month and gave up playing her "custom" strat, only to pick it up again once or twice a few months later, then we broke up and i ended up keeping the guitar cuz she didn't want it.

so, i'd suggest give your wife some schooling on guitars, if you haven't already (sounds like you have) and keep in mind that wanting a guitar could just be a phase she's going through, lol.

sure "she's read" they're easier to play, but have her actually hold the guitar and experience the neck shape. she might end up going for a nice little squier tele in the end..

i spent about $800 parting together my ex's guitar. i got lucky cuz it's actually a REALLY good strat. the only downside is that it has pink seymour duncan HBs and these pink marble dice knobs  :-X

ima stop rambling now  :D

I'm all for it!  Now you can justify acquiring guitars for her, that you will secretly lust after and play :)
