NGD: Epiphone Casino MIK 2001

Post by Haustnótt » Mon Feb 10, 2025 9:23 am

This cherry-coloured Peerless-Epi was a pleasant surprise, after some upgrades. Worst part (by far) was the stock pickups, extremely overwound at 12 Kohms. To make matters worse, the thick chrome-plated brass covers obliterated what little treble they had. The guitar obviously hasn't been played much, probably because of these awful-sounding pickups. What were they thinking when they put those on a guitar like this?

So I swapped in some P90s assembled from various parts I had lying around. Neck pickup now reads 7.4 Kohms, bridge pickup 8.2 Kohms. I put twin Alnico 3 magnets in the neck unit, twin Alnico 4s in the bridge. Covers are now silver nickel, which steals way less treble than brass does. The bridge pickup is really trebly now, and sounds best with the tone control slightly reduced.

The nut was really badly cut, so I made a new one from a bone blank I had.

So now this feels like a much more expensive guitar than what I paid for it (6000 NOK, which is around 535 USD). Extremely lightweight at 2.666 kg (5.88 pounds), yet well-balanced. Really easy to play. I put Pyramid Roundcore 11–50s on it, sounds like a good choice for this guitar.

The only bad thing: A dull spot on the 9th fret on the G string and 5th fret on the B string. (Not a dead fret, which would have been repairrable.) Not completely dead, but sustain is about 60 per cent on those notes compared to surrounding notes. I know this is quite common for thinline hollowbodies, and I guess I will learn to live with it.

It very slightly annoys me that the ⋲ is missing from the pickguard.

I have the identical guitar and always wanted to mod mine with new pickups but heard they are finicky to find ones that fit correctly.

You need pickup covers that follows the top curve of the body, and a taller bridge pickup. I built mine from parts, but there are several pickup makers who make Casino/ES 330 pickups. Just make sure the covers are nickel silver and not plated brass.

I'm similarly miffed that my Casino is missing its E decal. One of the pitfalls of buying second-hand is that this kind of thing is so prevalent.

Another common one is missing accessories that should go with keyboards, such as mini-MIDI converters and PSUs. Who pays such scant regard to these things that they get lost? [/rant]

Anyway, sorry to derail your NGD. Sounds like your improvements will reap dividends. Enjoy!

Nice! I have a Riviera from the same era. It’s a pretty nice guitar, if a little heavy for a semi. Wound up putting Firebird pickups in it, and it sounds great. I really need to change the pots, as they are more on/off switches with almost no taper. I’ve been saying that for like 5 years now and still haven’t done it. It also already had holes drilled for a Bigsby, so I put one back on.

Enjoy your new guitar, sounds like a fun one!

HNGD!

I've had my Unsung Casino for over a decade now it's not going anywhere, it's a lovely guitar. The electronics in mine were crap too so I installed a set of Lollars with the plastic covers and a new harness. My luthier liked it so much that he installed a nylon nut for me for free when he had it for a set-up!

I always thought that if I lost the "E" I'd be funny and just replace it with a block letter vinyl "E" like you can get on an alphabet sheet from Office Max.

That's very nice! I want one of those! Did the Firebird pickups fit directly in the mini humbucker holes?

Thanks! It is indeed. I have several similar guitars, but this is my first Casino. This is quickly becoming one of my favourite guitars, it is almost as fun as my Jazzmasters.

Thanks! What year is your Unsung? Are the Unsung Casinos also joined by the 17th fret instead of the 16th?

Mine is somewhat of an oddball as far as I can tell; it's a 2012 Unsung Korea with a solid wood neck attached at the 16th fret. I've looked all over the internet and only seen one other Unsung Casino with a solid neck but it was attached at the 17th fret. I originally thought that by 2012 production had moved to China but it's definitely MIK. I don't play it as much as my Jazzmaster or Dano Bass VI but it's one I can't see myself ever letting go. Actually, it's the guitar I've owned the longest now! I had a Peerless Casino a long time ago and it was a dud, completely unplayable... I was very disappointed.

Yeah, they fit with no mods. They even fit in the stock mounting rings. I really like them. They are unpotted and slightly microphonic, and add almost a slightly reverberant resonance in the low end. They also have a more single coil like treble and transient response that I love.

It’s a really fun guitar that I really need to spend more time with.

Well done ! This is not helping my GAS for the worn denim blue recent Casino that's for sale kinda locally, even if the quality on those seem to be mixed. I've been wanting a full hollow thinline for a while, and except for Casinos there's not much choice!

This is my first thinline hollowbody, and I'm very surprised how different it feels and sounds compared to centreblock thinlines. The weight is just one thing (at 2666 grammes – 5.88 lbs – this is by far my lightest electric), it feels just so much more comfortable in ways not easily described. It is just a very friendly guitar.

Good luck finding a good Casino! Have you considered getting a MIK? I've read that the early Peerless Casinos, 1995 at least, have good quality pickups and electronics, unlike mine originally had.

Casinos are a blast. I love how light they are also. It's funny- a Casino is super light but an ES-335 is super heavy, heavier than you would think.

The current lineup of Casinos are really good and still cheap.

Casino's are a blast indeed. I have gone through a few over the years and whenever i part ways with one i end up i get that same itch a few months later.

Currently i have a sunburst 2013 that plays and feels so nice. I'll truly be an idiot if i let this one go LOL.

I have an ES-330 and for some reason I bought a Casino about six months ago. I have no real use for it and sometimes I think about selling it but then I play it and it's just such a nice guitar. I mean it would be the first to go but I really like it.
