For guitars of the straight waisted variety (or reverse offset).

Any Gibson RD fans?

Post by debian » Sun Jun 15, 2008 10:52 am

I own a vintage Gibson RD Artist ('78 I believe), which I think is pretty much my favorite looking Gibson ever. Anyone else like the looks of them? It's sort of firebird-meets-explorer! Since the humbuckers sound more thin like a Fender, I think it fits in well amongst my Jaguars and Jazzmaster.

Here's an example for those that have never seen one. It was only produced for a few years:

I've heard some people get a really thick sound out of them. They have active electronics and were produced in several versions, 25.5" and 24.75" scale, different cosmetics and electronics. They look ok.

There's also a reissue with a 25.5" scale and a black to gray burst.

I noticed that one too, but I just don't think it's that cool. I liked the colors that the RD originally came in, and the blocks w/ headstock binding on the artist are just icing on the cake. The gold hardware is always nice too.

Actually there are conflicting websites about the scale length of that reissue. I like the finish though.

I think Silverburst only looks good on the Les Paul Custom, but maybe I'm just biased because that's where I saw it first.

It would look better with a black Schaller flatmount bridge though, that silver hardware kind of sticks out in an annoying way.

I think I'd also make a pickup swap. I don't know that I'm too wild about their choice of stock pickups (dirty fingers) either.
