I found a good way of dealing with GAS. Keep a few unfinished projects hanging on the wall, so that they are always in sight.
If I have real GAS (which does happen, I sell other stuff, guitar on non guitar related. I used to have large collection of unbuild scale aircraft. Accumilated over the years (teens and twenties) and sold this off the last few years to buy music gear. turned out to be a zero operation.

2nd, I try to build a lot of stuff myself, very time consuming, but I'm a patient man and I save money, for instance I wanted a thinline tele, so I build it myself. By the time it was done (took me about 4 months to build the body and aquire all the necesary parts, my GAS was gonne :D Still I love this tele and will never part of it. Same gooes for my JM's they were all upgraded and rebuild by myself.

3rd I try to get in touch with people who know their stuff and try to learn from them. I now have a good Amp tech friend. I learned how to build my own cabs from a carpenter friend, etc...
Saves me a lot of money. I don't push myself up but there is always something you can do for the other...

4rd I try to stick to just one thing, being music gear the last five years or so. I don't look at other stuff, might sound dull and perhaps a bit authistic, but that's me i guess. Been using the same computer for the past 5 years or so. + I got a house to pay and some house renovation to do. I also hate spending money on things I can easely do myself. (more extra cash to spent on gear or other things) I never bought a instrument on credit and tend to keep this way. If I can't afford it, i don't buy it. Keeps everyone happy. Never ever had a row with my wife over guitars or gear ever. I also never buy things online (or it should be a stomp box I already tried) but never a guitar or amp + I stay away from the bay.

Let's face it. Everyone has hobby's that cost him or her money. It's just one habbit takes larger sums at once while the other one is more spreaded over time.

just my 2 cent though ;)

This is such dangerous road to go down if you spend too much time on guitar forums, because "each kind" becomes more complex as you geek out on gear specs.  For example, you can't settle on just having "a tele" when there are teles with so many pickup configurations, which all supposedly sound different from other guitars with the same pickups.  Yikes!
Nah, that's much more specific than what I've got in mind. I need one solid body, one hollow body, one 12-string, one dreadnought acoustic, one classical acoustic, one bass, and one baritone. That's about it.

But then weird things like electric sitars and 8-string basses enter into my field of view...

I try to keep stuff more or less "even."  If I buy something, I'll quickly get rid of some other things to even out the pinch on the wallet.

That said, in the last year, I've had something like 7 analog delays, for example.  I'm now down to two.  (and used the rest to fund this or that).

I always try to buy at a level that will mean I can break even if I resell it.  Or at least be okay with the "$20 try out fee" if I sell it for $20 less than I paid.

Basically, the rule of thumb is:
something comes in, something's gotta go.

My Super-Sonic was a total impulse buy, I was fucked at the time and it seemed like a good idea and at the time I did have my entire student loan.

I also fritter a fair amount of money away on records, although I do only tend to buy rarer stuff that I like or records that I really want. The 80's/90's Emo stuff I've got is worth a lot so if I ever do need to sell it I could very easily for a decent profit, but I'm not that desperate yet.

Except for the house renovation thing, that's exactly where I stand.  I don't buy guitars unless I have the cash.  No credit cards or anything.  I do buy most of my gear online, though.

If I don't have the cash, I sell something.  (I've only sold 2 major pieces of gear, both CIJ Jags)

I'm not in a financial position where i can buy a guitar on a whim, i have to save and eat soup for a few months, but if i could i would. I'm terrible with money.

Same here. I use cards, but they get paid off at the end of the month. Had I really learned this lesson earlier in life (*cough* '94 MIJ *cough*), I would have saved myself a lot of extra trouble. Now if I can just get Nicole to go along with this strategy for our impending house purchase ...

the soup diet!  I once went two weeks w/o food (except canned goods)
for a piece of gear once.. It wasn't even a significant purchase either..
