For guitars of the straight waisted variety (or reverse offset).

A good Strat is a fantastic guitar - versatile, comfortable, dependable. Everybody should own one. Nearly everyone does, really.

But Strats are penny loafers. Mustangs/Jags/JM's are Chuck Taylors.

I like strats but they're not my favorite guitar.  They are a great guitar to learn guitar on though.  My very first guitar is a Squier Strat that I still use today.  I actually wouldn't mind getting my man crush's (Billy Corgan) signature series strat or a relic one from Danocastor.  No extra money though.

It think they look alright with the big CBS headstock actually. I don't WANT one, but I'd have one, you know?

No hatred for the Strat.
I like pointy headstock guitars for metal and hollow bodies with Bigsbys for rockabilly too.

So if the situation were reversed and the JM was the "standard" guitar that everybody played while the Strat was relegated to noise and art rock bands who originally started playing them because they couldn't afford a decent Jazzmaster, then I'd probably be a Strat guy.

Thats exactly how I feel about things. I don't like being just another clone of what everyone else wants and expects. I like being individual with what I do, and guitars are included. I have this sweet pair of purple pants I wear to school and I got stared at for wearing them, but I didn't care beacuse I thought they were rad :) . I don't mind strats, they just aren't my cup of tea. Like was also said earlier, they don't really stand out as guitars to me because there have been SO many greats that have used them, when I see them, its not a connection of "Oh, thats a Hendrix guitar" or "Thats a Stevie Ray Vaughan guitar". They just aren't what I want. When I see a Jazzmaster, I think of Robert Smith, the first artist I ever saw use one, or I think Sonic Youth. My favorite band is The Cure, so Jazzmasters are more of a personal connection to me than Strats are. I just am not a big fan of liking what every body else likes, or liking whats "hot". I think thats why I'm attracted to offsets so much.

I don't mind them. If I had one I would change the tailpiece, probably the pickups, and wire it with 3 switches so you can get all the pu combinations. Then I might also mess with the electronics (pots) to get maybe another configuration.

That's the way I deal with mine. That's my "experiments" guitar. I first wired a phase-reversing switch on the middle pickup, but I didn't find that useful. Now it has a series/parallel switch for the 2 and 4 positions of the selector, and an "always-on" switch for the neck pickup. It gives something like 9 different sounds. Some of them are unexpectedly interesting; like "Bass VI mode" 3 pickups in parallel, "Tele mode" neck / bridge in parallel, and the "Boosted parallel mode" : neck in parallel with [middle + bridge in series].

Also, as it is a "Contemporary Standard" MIJ Strat, the tailpiece is not of the vintage type, it has a fine-tuning tremolo (Gotoh or Kahler, don't remember) with a locking nut.

Here's the beast (all knobs are now of the same color) ;).

That's actually neither Gotoh nor Kahler. It's a unique device (the System 1, 2, or 2. I don't remember how they are different, though) that's very hard to find and usually worth as much as the guitar it's attached to.

That's the only reason I'm looking for a Floyd - I have a single humbucker, no pickguard Japanese Contemporary Strat and the System 1/2/3 is long gone.

Mine's a System I. Just found some info: if Wikipedia's right, it was built by Gotoh, even it has an embossed Fender logo. They also say Systems II and III were made by Schaller (not Kahler, my bad). Info reliabililty unknown.

I'm glad to find another "Contemporary" owner ...  :) I don't know what you think of yours, but I think the woodwork, fretwork, painting, finish are really great. I'm talking at least "American standard" quality here.

Edit: more info here about these tremolos.
