Thanks for the update B. Now that you've mentioned it, I do recall there being a long tenon non-CS LP in the last Musicians Friend catalog I got.

Mais non. I have an SG Special - reasonably priced and fucking awesome. Even the stock pups are good. Bit on the hot side for my liking, so I'm going to try a swap over to a Phat Cat and SD '59 humbucker tomorrow. That should be a pretty nice pairing - it worked well in my old Epi G-400, so it should be extra nice in the SG.

I don't understand why you have to pay so damn much for a decent Gibson.  The lower end ones feel cheap to me, and the higher end ones are RIDICULOUSLY overpriced.

Well, when I was looking for an SG there were quite a few second-hand ones fs at US dealers for very reasonable money. Like northern_dirt, I don't like the feel of new guitars, so I much prefer a good second-hand one to a new one.

They've always been expensive. I've a March '58 Gibson catalog and the 3 pup Custom is $422 w/case. Inflation calculators say that 1958's $422 is equivalent to 2006's nearly $3000. Expensive? sure. Ridiculously overpriced? Not much worse than they were 50 years ago.

I know, it's just crazy to me.  IMO, a Gibson isn't that much better than a Fender... Aside from the fact that it takes a lot more work to build a Gibson, what else justifies the 3X what Fender charges?  Are they really 3X better?  I've never played a NEW Gibson that I really liked much.  My bandmate has a 70's LP that plays nice, though.

The only solid bodied Gibson id buy now would be a double cutaway Special...

but id HAVE to go vintage or custom shop..
ive ABd a custom shop to a stock and the $500 more the Custom shop cost was worth it..
Now that said, that custom shop was equal in price to an AVRI Jazz/Jag.. So I don't much
difference in pricing between Fender and Gibson.. Sure if you start getting into hollow bodies
the prices go up.. but thats understandable with the build increase demanding more money.

If we are talking vintage Fender to Gibson.. Id say from what ive seen, the Gibsons cost LESS then Fenders..

It's just one of those things I guess. IMO, a Gibson isn't any better than a Fender, or a Harmony for that matter, at making music when it's in the hands of determined, competent, and inspired player. In other words, I can get to the grocery store in my '99 Protege just as quickly and reliably as my boss can in his new Lexus 350 and at a fraction of the price. To me, spending lots of money on new cars seems completely insane and crazy. I definitely understand where you're coming from.

I guess it depends what models you're looking at .. but if you take the most popular model of each then 50s strats are luxury car prices whereas 50s LPs are house prices ..

I guess I'm speaking in terms of build quality for the most part.  I believe that any electric can be made to sound good by upgrading pickups and such.  May still play like shit, though! :P
