I’d go with a Yamaha SG/SBG if I wanted a heavy sustain machine.
Agree and with the (best of any guitar IMO) coil taps they can spread their wings into other areas.

Less bellbottomed and top hatted baggage too, though there's a member of the RHCP into YSG's so there's essentially nothing untainted by rum associations in guitar land these days.

When did Doug Martsch play a les paul? I've only ever seen him with his red strat.
i seen a picture of him playing a jazzmaster but never a lessie
I have a promotional poster from Keep it Like a Secret, and he's playing an LP. Of course...I don't know that picking up a les paul once or twice---or even using it on a few among hundreds of recorded tracks---would be enough for me to call someone a player of les pauls...if it even matters.

But here's an argument for:
A few years ago I found out that somehow a spectacular 70s les paul had been passed down to my uncle. Even though les pauls have never at all been my thing, this one was amazing. And the picture of me holding it captured an uncharacteristic moment of uninhibited joy.

And here's an argument against:
Some of the sentiment of this thread is uncomfortably close to the lyrics and logic of a gross Van Halen song.

Why do we still get excited when we see a picture of some well-known person playing a guitar they don't usually play? Most of us are gear sluts and will happily pick up whatever guitar is sitting around a shop or friend's house. Somebody snaps a picture of Neil Young strumming a Jaguar in 1974 and we all go apeshit. I think 99% of the time the person in question noodles for a bit, and then goes back to their regular guitar of choice.

I just remembered one of my favorite LP playing bands (dual, no less)...

People shit on him for a lot of reasons, and I don't necessarily like his music, but he seems like quite a decent down to earth guy. He loves history and quotes The Simpsons a lot. Just seems like a guy I'd gladly hang out with.

When I think of Les Paul players, Dean comes to mind:

I think you better just sit down, go over the finance, and decide what kind of Les Paul you're going to be getting.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

That's like one out of ten banter, honestly if that was the chat even I'd be begging him to start telling me about his favourite magnets and what sunglasses have the best woman tone.

Early Simpsons, up to seasons 4-5 are some of the best animated shit ve ever seen... The quality started declining after that point.

Back to the Les Paul..

My vote goes to any Greco EG-800 or higher series.

I was once taken to task for making a similar remark about his wardrobe choices and indoor sunglasses. Thing is, it's true. He dresses like a fucking creep.

And put me down as being in support of the Yammy SG idea. I've always liked those. It's Andy Taylor's fault.
This is an excellent rectangle

I guess he was a sort of child "prodigy". Perhaps he just doesn't know better?

somewhat relevant - and this thread is super relevant to my interests lately- this thing will be arriving soon, I hope.

He’s playing one in a pic in the liner notes for keep it like a secret.
