Been after this guitar for years...super, super rare. They only made a very small amount..under 100 for two years. It's basically the Stuart Sutcliffe bass but the 6 string version. Great condition, the best colour(imo), complete.. and sounds amazing acoustically or plugged in and plays really great too.

Ooooh, congrats!! Is it strung with flats?

I'm down to one bass: my '66 Hofner Club, and while it isn't rare, it is a thing of beauty.

Man that's nice. I really do think those toaster pickups were Hofner's finest hour, I vastly prefer them to the later diamond type.

Wow Philip, that is the thing, going to a good home too. Your pebbled area is looking good too, looks almost worth the sore back. Was there one of these in that Tony Bacon book in sunburst, seem to remember something like that.

Btw knowing you as a long term VI owner, can I ask if you'd use this in the same situations or does it demand a different approach?

No...it's strung with a mish mash of rounds at the moment..I'm going to have it properly set up etc asap. :)

Yes! they are pretty much off the radar unless you are a serious hofner collector I would guess..

Thanks..that's all finished now thank god!... Yes the Tony Bacon book from 1991 is exactly where I first laid eyes on one..if you look in the photo index in the back it tells you it was owned by the Cocteau Twins. They supplied quite a few of their guitars for that book iirc.

Playing wise it feels like it would sound really interesting to played in a finger picking style and recorded acoustically..otherwise it seems to sound great as bass..but I will see what I can get out of it... it's a 30.5 inch scale like a fender VI but the neck is wider and flatter.

Very, very nice.

I did not know these existed either, but when I first saw the photo my reaction was “Stu Sutcliffe!”

Wow!! It looks really super! There is no greater feeling than finally being able to cross a grail off of the list :-*

Yeah, that's lovely. Great to see some Hofner hollowbody love.

Add me to the "never seen one of these before" list too. It's really interesting, to see how many different companies actually made 6-string basses.

Yeh if it wasn't for that book I'd never have known about it. The only one I knew of after that was in music ground's hofner collection.

Hofner also made a a solid body 6 string bass...the 188...not my cup of tea though.

Interesting. I just Googled it & see it's their take on the regular Bass VI shape.
Pretty interesting with the faux alligator skin tolex (?) and I love their style of necks with the extra wide block inlays.

Still, I'd probably take a Fender Bass VI over it & you seem to be doing fine in that department!

I dont mind it, but apparently the quality isn't very good with some of the later hofners. A Fender VI is much superior... I've just always fancied a semi acoustic VI :) There is also the Gibson EB-6 and Rickenbacker 4005/6 bass...but both are ultra rare...the 4005 is ridiculous money since I think they only made 10 or something.

It’s not quite a Bass VI, and chambered instead of semi-hollow, but I have a fondness for the TV Jones/Gretsch Spectra Sonic Baritone guitar.
